Re: Tank size comparisons?

I actually modified the 20g (it was a 20L) by removing the bottom pane of glass from the tank so that I could just use a regular lid on it which allowed me to access the tank from the top. For me it would've been way too much of a hassle to have to remove the 20g every time I needed to get inside of...

False bottom question

Ok, so I just finished my false bottom, and when placing it into the tank, it shifts around a bit, meaning its not an exact fit....I did measure, several times, but the egg crate squares are so large, that when I test-placed it in the first time, it was just a bit too large, but then removing one m...

Re: Tank size comparisons?

I agree that you should go for the 55g. The width is actually the same (as both a 20g tall and a 20g long), but it'll provide twice the length (48" vs 24") and 3" more height than a 20 tall, and 18" more in length and almost 7" more height than a 20L. A couple of years ago I moved my crabs into a 55...

Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread

I just cached 7 of my 8 PPs and checked for eggs. Guess what? One female has hundred of eggs in her shell. So in the next days the number of larvae might increase astronomical. naalide, have you had success with your female indos getting any eggs? My goal is to successfully breed my Indos but I hav...

Re: My Straw (Perlatus) baby thread. Update: Megalopa stage

Thanks Eugooglizer, and I might add Zoolander was one of the best comedies, ever. Yesssss, pretty sure you're the first person to actually have gotten that reference lol--you get a gold star and I will now have to name my next hermit crab after you :P Also keep in mind that if you can dodge a wrenc...

Re: My Straw (Perlatus) baby thread. Update: Megalopa stage

Can someone verify the ingredients in these HBH algae grazers wafers for me? IT looks ok at first glance, but I've been wrong before :( http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/Gmankuza/Hermit%20Crabs/Straw%20babies/alge_ing_check.jpg Not crazy about 4 of the 5 first ingredients being soy flour, wheat...

Re: My Straw (Perlatus) baby thread. Update: Megalopa stage

right now I'm using multiple jars, there's 2 left in each jar for a total of 8 megalopa left. And I do full water changes every day using my second set of jars and the turkey baster. I would be very interested in the filter method though, anything to make things easier would be good since my time i...

Re: My Straw (Perlatus) baby thread. Update: Megalopa stage

I'm very sorry for your recent losses. Sounds like the best option is to jar each megalopa individually in order to ensure any kind of survival rate. I know it's not a very appealing choice, and I can genuinely relate to the difficulties entailed as for a couple of years I raised bettas and all male...

Re: Thoughts on Vitamin D

You're right, I did take a break from keeping hermit crabs. I had my first group for approximately a year and they were rehomed to someone local. I don't know that all the Es in that group didn't start killing everyone off after they were rehomed, I just know that it did not happen with me. Es were ...

Re: Thoughts on Vitamin D

Ok so what those two articles illustrate to me is that perhaps Es are less ideal for captivity. Unless someone has kept Es of a wide variety of sizes for a long time they are unlikely to have enough of the preferred pre-modified shells for each E (since it the most likely way to aquire a pre-modifi...

Re: Thoughts on Vitamin D

I do agree there is a very high possibility they need UVB, it's the whole reason I made a UVB sundeck. I just think these are 2 separate issues, the aggression and the crabs overall exoskeleton health. I do not agree that providing enough shells, space, hides, or anything of that nature will preven...

Re: Thoughts on Vitamin D

I haven't been very active in this thread so far--letting boxcat handle the replies pretty much on her own which really isn't fair considering I'm the one who has been theorizing about the role vitamin d3 plays in land hermit crabs--which we already know have very high calcium requirements--and the ...

Re: Thoughts on Vitamin D

How did Carol's crabs have access to UVB? I thought she kept them indoors and UVB doesn't penetrate glass. Vitamin D is in high amounts in the fish food I feed my crabs, and it's a very hearty vitamin, the fish doesn't have to be fresh. My aggressive E's were that way since i got them, so maybe the...

Re: What do I need to know about Bettas??

That's so funny. I've also been looking at the Fluval Spec on sale at Petco. I was all set to buy it but then ended up having to change banks and I don't have my new debit card yet. Although I said four betta tanks is my limit, I was thinking of setting up the Spec on my desk for my guy with heavy ...
