Re: My crab keeps getting naked, running around and then going into a new shell

You have a number of things that need to be corrected in order to have healthy crabs. See my replies below. Be sure to read through the care sheets, they have all the information that you need: http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=120 1. What kind of substrate is used in your t...

Re: Humidity

Did you cover the lid? If not, the humidity will not last. Crab Island Jungle Bed is cypress bark. I know that Cypress is on the safe wood list, but from what I have read, it is not a good substrate. Do you plan to remove the gravel and do moistened play sand? EE would be a better addition than what...

Re: Humidity

You need to remove the gravel. Are you using play sand? You will need to add water and mix it up to be sand castle consistency. The water needs to be dechlorinated fresh or salt water. Then if you need to mist/ add more water later, it should be dechlor fresh water. Many of us use the added EE becau...

Re: My crab keeps getting naked, running around and then going into a new shell

A naked crab means something is not right. Had he surface molted? If so, it is still too early for him to be back in the main tank a week later.
As GB said, please fill in the emergency template so we can help you trouble shoot.

Re: First shell change is crab not happy?

Many of us use a Rubbermaid/ Tupperware type of plastic bowl, and use zip ties to attach some plastic canvas/ craft mesh. Some of us use rocks in the bottom of the dish. Some of us use a dish with a ramp built-in.

Re: Humidity

A couple of questions:
How large is your tank and what is on for a lid/ cover?
What is the temperature?
What type and how deep is your substrate?

Re: Has anyone else had issues ordering from Hermie's Kitchen?

Yup. I know the feeling. It takes a couple weeks and costs an arm and a leg! I once wanted to buy a 3D printed belt buckle (super light/flat). It cost $5 (ish) and they wanted $20 shipping! Yes! I lived in very remote areas (Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, as well as northern Manitob...

Re: First shell change is crab not happy?

My sister had a coworker who had hermit crabs at work (it was a vet clinic, so animals were okay, LOL). One of the crabs there picked up a shell and yelled at it for about an hour one day. It was one of the only times they ever heard the crabs chirp. I can't remember if the crab ended up changing in...

Re: First shell change is crab not happy?

Oh yeah, totally normal for them to climb all over shells, try some on or not, bury some, etc. LOL, crabs are funny.

On a bit of a separate note - is that a water dish on the left?

Re: New Puppy

Awwwww….I have had two chocolate labs in my life. The first was 8 months when we got her from a Humane Society, and she was sooooo hyper and destructive!! She did turn out to be the Best Dog Ever, but I swore I would never get another who was less than 4 years old! LOL! So the second one I got from ...

Re: Hows this setup looking?

Looking good! I wouldn't say that more open space is needed, crabs like places to climb and hide. One suggestion is that sponges aren't needed in water dishes, and only harbor bacteria - so I would remove those. It's hard to tell how deep your dishes are, but they need to be deep enough that crabs c...

Re: Substrate

I use the 5 parts sand to 1 part EE ratio. I find it holds the shape well, and my humidity has always been good.
