Re: how to increase oxygen in the tank when there is a power failure

Oxygen shouldn't be a problem with a power failure. When you open the tank, there will be enough air exchange.

Re: Question For Those With Cats and Crabs

Only my brain-damaged mini-cat likes to get up on the tank and watch 'crabby TV'. She only weighs 5 pounds, and I have a plexi glass lid. When I only had saran wrap, I had to keep the door to the room locked so there were no cat-related mishaps.

Re: Crab out of shell

No, it certainly came on really sudden but I'm suspicious our crabs are not coming out at all. Even for food, water... I'm putting out some cooked shrimp for them tonight. Its solid white and if any touch it I'll be able to see substrate on it by tomorow. Ive done everything Ive read about except s...

Re: Molting or not?

Hard to say what is happening. Could be molting, or de-stressing, or just hanging out, LOL.

If you fill in the Emergency template, we can help make sure you have everything optimal to give him the best chance.

Re: About One Month into being New Crab Owner

I buy my dry foods from the Hermit Crab Patch and Canadian Chubby Crab. One of the admins of the HCA has a store too. You can also get dried foods at some health food or pet stores. I buy freeze dried shrimp at a pet store, they are marketed for turtles. You just need to make sure they are organic a...

Re: How much calcium is recommended?

LOL! No, I watched it go from a whole surf-board, to a half! Every time I checked on them, there was Sonny, munching away on it! What was left was all chewed up with big chunks missing.

Re: How much calcium is recommended?

Now that my crabs are bigger, it's kind of fun to see just how much Cuttlebone they can chew off! I swear Sonny ate half a surf-board when he came up from his last molt.

Re: Crab out of shell

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? 6-8" of all EE, no sand currently 2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? Yes, middle. 75* 75% humidity 3. Is a heat...

Re: About One Month into being New Crab Owner

When I have 'pet sand', I do like you and change the water less often. I also put out only a small amount of dry foods, and only change it when it starts to go moldy. I check the tank daily, so I see when someone is back up and can add more food then.

Agreed!

I don't think there is a safe way to ship crabs, as far as I know.

Re: Possible new tank, got some questions.

To answer your question in the mChat thingy, here's the guide as to number of crabs, sizes, tank sizes:

There are a few threads about how many bags of sand and how much EE is needed, you can try the search bar.

Re: Is he suffocating?

To clarify - you came across him when digging to put the new pool in. And he is where you found him still? Did you cover him with anything, or can you still see his shell?

I am thinking that you are correct that you probably need to have a look at him, and iso him at this point.

Re: My hermit crab is handicapped! HELP

HG has given you some great advice. Crabs should never molt on the surface - the fact that yours have done so frequently, means that things are not right in their environment. You have a number of things that need to be improved, in order for your crabs to be healthy. Be sure to read through the car...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

As long as the temp isn't dropping in the tank/ tote, it doesn't matter what it's doing outside.
