Colour Change in Isopods?

I have orange isopods in my tank. I've had them for close to two years now. They've all been orange. But when I was cleaning my tank the other day I found a grey-black isopod! I'm curious if he's a genetic anomaly or if my orange isopods could lose their colour over a couple generations or what. Is ...

Re: Cost of Hermit Crabs in Your Area

I adopted all 7 of my crabs. The first 3 I paid 50usd and they came with a 40gal tank and some supplies. the other 4 were just given to me with a 37gal tank and stand and tons of supplies. The first group came from craigslist and the second came from FB marketplace. The hermit crab industry is horr...

Re: Spiders In The Tank

I guess the spiders might help if you have a lot of aphids.

Cost of Hermit Crabs in Your Area

Hey guys, I know it's a random question but I'm curious. I was at my local Petland today and noticed that the cost of a hermit crab had more than doubled! They used to be between $6-$10 depending on the size. Now, a small hermit crab is $21! I'm guessing it's because the Canada-US border is basicall...

Re: New Digs!

Wow! That's a huge tank. It looks great. I'd recommend putting a lid on it though. Crabs can climb well and escape.

Re: Review My Crabitat (Updated)

I had trouble affording organic and non-gmo goods until I stopped eating out. I've had crabs for eight years and I don't buy organic food for them. I just can't afford it (and I don't eat out either so don't say that's why). I do feed them fresh produce from my garden in summer, but otherwise they ...

Re: Pesticide and Leaves

I'm not sure if I could find out, to be honest. The ant spraying was done shortly after we had a horrific storm that broke windows and took off siding so my landlady has a lot on her plate and likely wouldn't remember if they told her what kind of pesticide it was.

Re: Pesticide and Leaves

Do you know what they sprayed? Knowing how long it remains in the soil would be helpful. Rinsing off the leaves would remove most of the surface residue but anything absorbed would be in the tissues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Unfortunatley, I don't. I rent, so I didn't deal directly with p...

Re: Can I have a crabitat without lid/cover?

As others have said, you need a lid. And, you need a lid that's heavy enough that they can't push it up. I once had an escapee who was able to push up my screen lid and climb out. Thankfully, he didn't go far and I just found him chilling on top of the tank.

Pesticide and Leaves

So, I've been adding leaves from my yard to the crabitat lately (mostly for the isopods). Well, it's time to add more leaves but I have a problem. We had a serious ant problem and my yard was sprayed with pesticide (not sure which one) three weeks ago. Will I be able to use leaves from my yard again...

Re: Sudden Extreme Humidity Loss While I'm Away From Home

I wouldn't freak out over a few low days, it happens in the wild. Your contractors are likely drying out the air in the house to get the basement as dry as possible as quickly as possible to combat mold growth. If the house is too dry, the tank will leak humidity, like a drying sponge. It'll be an ...

I would wonder if the gauge is off. You could try calibrating it to see if it's accurate or not?
I'm going to try that when I can get back into town. Hopefully that's the problem.

Re: Sudden Extreme Humidity Loss While I'm Away From Home

Sorry about your house and hermit troubles! Is there anyway you could get out to buy a glass aquarium top? Usually you can buy the glass tops separate from light strips etc. I bought the glass top to my 20 gal L at Petco, and the top to my 55 gal online. I've noticed the glass tops keep in humidity...

Sudden Extreme Humidity Loss While I'm Away From Home

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? I use Eco Earth, no sand. It’s over twice the depth of my larger crab, about 5-6 c.m. 2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usua...

Re: Quick bird seed question

I recently fed my crabs birdseed and ended up with some grasses growing when they flipped the dish over. They seem to like the growth more than the seeds.
