Never give your hermit crabs untreated tap water. There are many places in the US where tap water contains chemicals which will kill hermit crabs.

You need to treat the water first just like you would treat tap water before adding it to an aquarium.

I keep getting them with adoptees, and the former owners are, like, "they never change shells, but here, take them!" Aside from eating, drinking, moss munching, and what not of course. Is this normal? Also, I've read about crabs comparing sizes. I've had four crabs for a year now and I haven't seen this yet :( I'm hardly ever in the same room so I can't say they haven't done it. Just that whenever I AM in here I'...

The coconut crab is the hermit crab's cousin - the big bad one which doesn't need a shell.

It is illegal to import them into the US.

Smoothies! I received a Nutri Ninja for Christmas and so, I have been making smoothies every day. They include: mixed berries (strawberries, black berries, blue berries) , bananas, kale, Spanish, and a small amount of yogurt. Can I give some of the smoothie to the crabs? I can't find an ingredient list, and I would not risk it until we know for sure that it is safe.

None of these are worth keeping, Nate, as they all contain either copper sulfate or ethoxyquin, preservatives unsafe for hermit crabs. The All Living Things variety diet does not contain those ingredients, so far as I can tell from reading the tiny print on the label. I'm looking at a 4 oz canister...

Look in the fish section; all of the single ingredient foods are acceptable sources of protein (and I am using most of them).

I ise the All Living Things turtle medley with my hermit crabs; it's a diverse source of protein and makes for a great base for food mixes.
