Re: Just Brought home Molting crab and he turned blue?

All natural is the best way to go! Whether that’s fresh foods or mixes bought from crab food places (I get mine from HCP, shops on Etsy, etc) that’s what you want to feed. They are scavengers, so they eat pretty much anything they get their claws on. And there’s no artificial stuff in the wild (alth...

Re: Just Brought home Molting crab and he turned blue?

Just chiming in that pellet food really isn’t the best for them—most brands have filler and other junk in them that they don’t need and can ultimately be quite unhealthy for them. I would also cover him with a hut of some sort, or anything else you can do to make it dark. It will simulate the condit...

Re: New Class Pet

Congrats! Crabs are a great pet for students to learn about specialized care for animals. They’re like reptiles, where they require specific things just to live and are definitely a good education point :) Welcome!

New UTH recommendations

Ultratherm is a great brand, and I've also had good luck with my Aiicioo that I got off of Amazon. Insulating them for the winter is a great thing to do too, and both brands can be safely insulated.

Re: I can't believe it

It looks like he molted, but then went back down to chill for a day or two. Mine have done this before, they will go up and down for a few days, almost as if they are getting used to being above ground again. He probably went back to see if there was any pieces he wanted to keep munching on :) It ta...

Re: How in the world?!

They grow like weeds when they are little! One of my girls went from a tiny little small to a mid sized medium in the span of like two years. It's great to watch! :)

Good luck! Winter prepping can be a chore, but the UTHs really are handy!

Re: Dangerous crab?

Ah, I read it backwards--I thought the crab you had had a month was out of the shell. My bad, lol!

I agree with the above post, sounds like it was a result of conditions and aggression. I'm sorry about the poor guy :(

Re: 3rd year with eggs!

Sadly I'm not able to, don't have the funds or the time to try my hand at raising them yet! :( I really want to one day though!

Ah, as I'm sitting here typing this she is sitting in one of the logs shoveling them out--guess I caught her at the end, lol!

3rd year with eggs!

Just wanted to share one of my girls with her eggs this year, this is her second year, and my other crab who would have them for the third year now is molting so I guess no eggs for her, haha! I love seeing them with eggs so much. Glad to know Neptune doesn't leave his ladies hanging ;) This is Nora...

Re: Jack's lost a claw!!

You can do something as simple as crushed egg shells, but my guys never showed much interest. They LOVE cuttlebone though! You can get it at the petstore, they sell it in packs for the birds. Just make sure it's plain in color (I've seen them colored before) :)

Re: Jack's lost a claw!!

Is it totally gone? It looks more damaged from what I can see in the top picture. Might have just been an unfortunate accident under the surface :( If he hasn't already, he will likely drop the damaged limb since it's easier to drop it and then regrow on the next molt than it is to keep it. I've see...

Re: Molting gone wrong??

Hey there! First off, if his shell is away from him in this situation it's best to gently dig him up and get him re-shelled. He will die without a shell. Especially since he just dug down, no process has started yet and he will not be in any danger. Crabs also do not need to be isolated for molting....
