Re: Tote Crabitat and Temperature

Totes can be great habitats. They’re portable, and are a cost effective way to provide a larger amount of space for cheap. You can put a heat mat like an ultratherm on the side; use a thermostat/dimmer switch if necessary. Cut a hole in the lid and place a reptile lamp fixture with LED bulb in it fo...

Better to use an ultratherm or heat mat.

Re: I have never seen this before

That's strange... I didn't think they could stay under that long, especially since their gills are meant for land! 5 PPs: Koa, Moja, Siam, Chella, and Ozark They have modified gills that have to stay moist in order for them to breathe properly, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can only be on ...

Yes. It is very common for new to you crabs to bury to destress and possibly molt. Most of the crabs I have and have fostered went under the minute they had access to adequate substrate.

Re: How can my little brother help?

Have had hermit crabs since my son was that age. He’s always helped spot clean the tank, fed them, helped with water changes, washed shells, etc.

Also 6 years old is not too young to learn kitchen skills, with supervision.

Re: What to keep in a lil tank

So my sister kept a beta fish in a one gallon tank and since it passed she has no use for the tank. I want to keep something a bit cooler in that tank but I'm assuming nothing can really be kept in such a small tank. I also think even a beta shouldn't be kept in such a small tank. What use could I ...

I just poke a hole in the seal instead of removing it. 2 drops per gallon.

Re: 20% Hermit Crab Humidity at PETCO

The main thing you can do is not buy their crabs and attempt to educate people about the hermit crab trade business. PETA actually has a few videos on You Tube about it. , just search "peta hermit crab". I won't post a direct link but you should be able to find it easily. It's amazing how many of t...

Re: Molting Gone Bad

Can you post pics?

Also, lots of things can happen during a molt. They can even drop limbs and regrow them completely during a molt.

I feel like whoever told you that is mistaken.

Re: Honey

The thing is, one of the other groups I’m in, the Land Hermit Crab Owner’s Society, says it’s recommended as a treat only and that it’s not a healing food. I’ve wanted to buy some from GotButterflies to have on hand just in case one of my guys needs a quick boost. Hey I know GB sells it but since y...

Re: German cockroach infestation

I would prefer not to do that, most of my crabs don't really come out during the day. But I will see what I can do. Unfortunately if they are in your tank, they are also in your home. German cockroach infestations necessitate extreme entomological warfare to remove, and if they are present at a lev...

Re: New 2 keeping crabs alive! 2 Questions

The good thing is that many crabbers have been able to successfully breed - and raise - the babies into land hermit crabs. Its certainly a rollercoaster - just reading their efforts is enough tbh - but its amazing to tag along on the journey! As for lid, I agree with above. Saran wrap on the areas ...

Re: New 2 keeping crabs alive! 2 Questions

I ordered lexan sheets off of amazon and cut them to fit the inside lip of my old 55g tank, then put the wire screen over them. I have cats who like to sit up there so that worked best.

I still haven’t found the screen lid I want for my 150g :(

Re: What did I witness?

Hermit crabs carry water in their shells to keep their abdomens moist and to brush over their gills. It sounds like a shell fight so make sure that your crabs have plenty of options to choose from. If you don’t mind going over your crabitat conditions we can help address any areas of concern. Sent f...

E’s can be green or blue tinted in their legs. Mine still have blue tones.
