Re: Class Pets

The getting pinched part could be removed totally by not handling the crabs. Crabs are really a hands off pet so the children should be encouraged to watch the crabs going about their crabby daily life while they are still inside the tank and in a warm humid environment. Not handling of crabs means ...

Re: Rescued a large hermy questions about his exoskeleton

Hi there, bigger crabs are also heavier and will move the shells in the shell shop around as they stomp through. All crabs have hard exo (after they have finished a molt and hardened up) The fact you can hear him walking on the shells is totally normal. If he is heaps bigger than your other crabs it...

Re: Strange behaviour

I have a UVB tube above my tank. It is on a 12/12 cycleI don't know if any UVB actually gets into the tank but it lights it well. The room the tank is in also gets a good amount of natura light (but not directly on the tank) the plants have only been in a couple of weeks so time will tell if they go...

Re: Large shell... small crab.

Be prepared for the crab to go down for a molt. One of my babies (yes captive bred baby) did that at 18mths of age... Changed out of an 8mm shell into a 15mm.... I thought he would give it up quickly but nope... Then he vanished for a couple of weeks and came back heaps bigger and filling that shell...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200124/858b2baf5e957141e978b36b36cbd5f5.jpg . Some dieback as predicted but I suspect that may be due to being close to the heat mat. The hair grass is now in the fresh pool too and it is looking a bit brown. That could be from it’s time in the salt though. Sent f...

Re: Strange behaviour

Dunno about your crabs but tank looks great! I need to add some green like that. Just reading here I’m not expecting plants to work but yours look like they are. I have pothos but haven’t added it yet. Thought it might be bad for them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Thanks for the compliment. T...

Strange behaviour

The new vine does sort of make it more leafy and protected feeling.

Re: Strange behaviour

Yep it’s really weird coz I’ve never seen him behave like this. Hanging all day at the front of the tat with his face pressed up to the glass (almost) only change I’ve made is add an overhead vine. So perhaps he feels more protected now and is willing to hang out in the “open” Sent from my iPhone us...

Strange behaviour

My crab Mango (male varibilis) who I’ve had for 6 years has been behaving rather oddly. For 2 weeks he hardly moved or ate. Then he started eating heaps and moving around. He has been leaving a shell drag trail all this time and the last few days he has been digging out hollows all over the place bu...

Re: Hi everyone!

I believe Taptalk only stores pictures for three years then deletes them. For pictures to stay you need to upload them to an online storage site. That might be so but the videos vanished about 12mths after posted. When I last looked the photos were still there. I don't have an online storage site t...

Sorry I hit the wrong button. If you search for Aussie breeding attempt in the breeding forum you will see my posts.

Re: Hi everyone!

I find tap a talk good for uploading photos but all my videos of my breeding processes vanished. They were uploaded from tap a talk too. No one seems to know what happened to them.

Re: Breeding and Adopting Out

Having the right habitat to encourage breeding isn't all that difficult and now that many more people are keeping crabs in good conditions we are seeing a lot more with eggs. It is the stages after they are deposited in the salt water that cause the difficulties. Anything we do needs to mimic the oc...

Re: Hermit Crab Age

My two crabs hatched on 4th December 2016 and are totally different in size. They have had the same conditions and access to the same food and shell choices their entire lives so size doesn't really give an indication of age other than bigger is usually older BUT having said that bigger is NOT older...
