Did you hot glue the mesh into the hamster wheel? Trying to glean ideas for my remodel.

Re: Ordering from Richard's Sea Shells

It is fractions of an inch, units so small that really only carpenters and other professions that need exactness use. It's kind of silly when it comes to hermit crab shells. 1/8 is plenty! Thanks for the confirmation! I had been about to email them about it but was like... Let's ask someone first :...

Re: Ordering from Richard's Sea Shells

They have separate numbers for shell length and shell opening, so it's definitely shell opening. I think those measurements are fractions of an inch, when I think about it some more. It was kind of confusing for a while, I'll be honest haha. But I think that's what I'll go with. Thanks! Sent from my...

Re: Ordering from Richard's Sea Shells

I was actually hoping to find guidelines for Richard's measurements. I've seen opening sizes for 32/64th and 14/32nd and various other sizes. I'm assuming that's in millimeters? Why are some listed in mm and others in inches?

Re: And now it's a bottle baby kitten...

My grandma's senior cat got a random ear hematoma that spread down his neck. Her vet couldn't figure out what was wrong so I took him to my vet, who immediately palpated his abdomen, found him painful, and took rads, which revealed an abdominal hemangiosarcoma. He explained to us that random hematom...

Re: Odd behavior

One of my PP's did the "hanging out of the shell" thing the other night. I was really worried! The shell opening was face up on the sand and he was hanging out of it, pinching some of the moss from the moss pit! I was afraid he was going to streak, but after watching for a while, I figured he was ju...

2days and hermit crab s dead

Is it possible he pulled a surface molt and that was his exo? Check inside the shell to see if he's in there. Mine have never surface molted, usually they do that when they are stressed or cannot dig down deep enough to molt below ground. If that's the case, I think the protocol is to leave him with...

Re: 2days and hermit crab s dead

First off let me start by saying i got a hermit crab on a whim on Sunday. I brought him home after finding our pet atore was out of a lot of his needs. So he had a small travel looking tank, and rocks for the bottom and his 3 s Dishes of his salt water, declorinated water, and food dish. I ran a he...

Re: Trend of dead crabs - am I doing something wrong?

I saw your question about wetting your substrate using Prime. I don't know if it's bad to mix your substrate with spring water, but I've always read to mix your substrate with saltwater. To me this always made sense because hermit crabs live by the ocean so they would be used to digging in sand that...

Re: Trend of dead crabs - am I doing something wrong?

Hi, there! Thank you for posting your photos and giving us details about your crab care! I've owned crabs for almost one year now, and I'm sure you'll get other more detailed responses from much more experienced crab owners, but I can tell you a couple things just from looking at the photos you post...

Re: Tank size and number of crabs

Thanks, CallaLily. I figured 2 more small-medium PPs max, and in a few years I'll upgrade to a larger tank. I guess I can only tell myself that the person adopting out was looking for a particular person and I just wasn't it. No matter how much I read it stills stings when someone implies you're not...

Tank size and number of crabs

Hi, everyone, I am a new owner and have been reading through a lot of posts on HCA and also HCO's Facebook page. I noticed a discrepancy between recommended tank sizes + number of crabs on HCA and HCO, and wanted to know from experienced HCA crabbers what they feel is best. HCO appears to be more co...

Uth = under tank heater. Except you mount these on the side of your tank, above the substrate. [emoji3]

Sending good thoughts your way! I've been reading this whole thread from the beginning and want to say kudos for taking them in, even if they didn't all make it. I'll be checking for posts on this little guy's progress and hope he only gets better!
