Flea Fogging

So, my dog has had a problem bringing home fleas from my parents' house. In the past we've been good at catching things before they go too far, but we switched flea preventative and I don't think it's doing the job (as dog was covered in flea dirt). We've done (for months) the runaround of the vacuu...

Crabs and Music

Has anyone noticed their crabs being drawn to music at all? I could be completely insane (well, that's not altogether unlikely), but I just started playing the ukulele in the last couple of weeks and every single time I sit in the bedroom and play it, my largest crab comes out of hiding and just sit...

Figuring Out Who's Who

So I've just today found my last molter up and at 'em. My husband was trying to understand how I know which is which. I find this entertaining and no one else around me does, so then it warrants a forum post! I have 3 and they all went down at about the same time in late October. My smallest, Tiny T...

Re: Trend of dead crabs - am I doing something wrong?

I'm a little late to this game but I'm going to weigh in on the Aldi question. I love Aldi. They have been doing a great job of expanding their organic/health food options. Produce is cheap and you can freeze some to save for later. Go for it - your crabs (and your wallet!!) will thank you! Sent fro...

Re: Typical noise level of crabs?

My husband and I have ours in the bedroom. I also sleep with a fan on so it drowns out some of the clinking but I've never had a problem with noise at all.

Re: Post your crabitats!

FINALLY have my temps up to 80 degrees and humidity is at 89. It only took two months and a lot of trial and error to get here!!

Springtails?

So I have been working on boosting heat and humidity and I saw in the condensation on the inside of the tank some little trails that are very winding. Upon very close inspection, they appear to be white little guys with two visible antennae. Now in the What's that Bug in my Crabitat? post, I see the...

Re: Apparent First Molt Success

Looks like moving the coco fiber wall has set the temp to a steady 78 degrees. Still not quite where I'd like it, so I'll have to do some re-insulating. So I did cardboard then foil then reflectix - is that an appropriate order? Also looks as though my littlest was my successful molten. She's nice a...

Re: Tank cracking

I have 7 from small to large in a 65g and love it. Same footprint as your 40 -- 36 wide and 18 deep -- but 24 high, lots of room for deep sub and climbing structures, too. It looked enormous when we brought it home, but now that we're used to it, a 90 would not have been much bigger: same height an...

Re: Apparent First Molt Success

I think it might be the cocowall, because if your house is in the mid 70's your tank shouldn't have trouble climbing the extra few degrees to 80, especially with that much insulation. I suspect most of your heat is getting trapped between the insulation and the wall. Is the glass on the other side ...

Re: Apparent First Molt Success

Do you have a uth that you can insulate? Flukers and ultratherms can be insulated with reflectix, or just plain cardboard and foil. It brings the temp up in my tat by at least 5 degrees with just some thick cardboard. If you don't have one that you can safely insulate you could consider doing the s...

Re: Apparent First Molt Success

I'm sure that means your pet sand will be sand no longer soon! Have you made sure your temperature gauge is working correctly by comparing it to another one? Or is there a way to boost your house's ambient temp by a few degrees? I have checked with a few gauges. There seems to be a bit of gradient ...

Apparent First Molt Success

So about 6 weeks ago, my three crabs (two medium, one small) went down for their first molt. This has been especially nerve-wracking for me, as I've been trying to keep my heat up (even with Reflectix the output just doesn't seem to be great). So I've been carefully curating the space, adding fake f...

Re: Want to buy food organic foods

I would also try the local farmers market. Not everyone in ours is organic, but many are! I like knowing who is growing/raising my food.
