Re: Soon to be new crab owner

Welcome to the HCA. The first thing you will learn on her is that most caresheets and items like food, substrate, and waters marketed for hermit crabs in pet stores are actually unsafe for them. Most stores see crabs as a cheap disposable pet. A parent will spend $50 on the kit for their kids first ...

Re: Worm castings

How deep is your substrate? The general rule is a minimum of three times deeper than your largest crab, or 6 inches. It should be mixed with dechlorinated fresh or saltwater to sand castle consistency. Dry sand won't let your crabs dig and molt. I'm not sure if I would put the worm poop directly on ...

Re: Is this a flood??

First you can pinch the substrate to see if it falls apart. Similar to how instant ocean can clump up. If it falls apart like regular dry sand your substrate could use some water. If it is dry adding a little water like a 1/2 cup a day in different areas is best. It will allow the water to slowly wi...

Re: Is this a flood??

Your substrate on the bottom appears ok to me. Your upper layer looks like it may be a bit dry. Does it hold it's shape or does it fall apart when you pinch it? I believe substrate that is too dry can also kill crabs. I believe when their new experience is soft the dry sand can leech moisture out of...

Re: Is this a flood??

Do you use bubblers in your water or get a lot of condensation on the inside of your tank? Both of those can trigger flooding inside your tank. Then the flood brings on bacterial blooms. I would say if you have dripping wet sand even less than an inch there is a good chance you can have a bloom in p...

Re: Is this a flood??

How far down were your crabs you found after digging? Were they near or in the moist area? You may not have any major flooding but enough water pooled at the bottom to make it more wet. I would try to find a safe spot to dig where there are no crabs to disturb. Try to slowly hand scoop the substrate...

Water And Creating A Bioactive Setup.

Courtney Iris Karr AKA: The Cholla Queen did this presentation at Crab Con about creating a bioactive crabitat. She goes over everything in detail, water, lighting, Isopods, land and water plants, and also diet. The area I found most interesting was the water portion. Some of it goes a bit over my h...

Who Doesn't Like Baby Pictures?

I personally dislike pictures of parents showing off their babies. Kittens, puppies, turtles, and whatever else makes me smile though. Xenocrab and I are back from Crab Con, I will post a run down in the next day or two, hopefully. We tried to get six E's but I believe we got three E's and three P's...

Re: Supplies Wants/Needs

We have found various organic food grade flower petals, and leaves in bulk containers at a local health food store. The items we purchased were in big containers and you scoop out how much you want. The first time we went we thought we had $25 in foods. We got pink rose buds, calendula flowers, dand...

Re: We Have Strawberry Eggs!!!!

I was super surprised when I saw it it. I just wish the glass wasn't so dirty so I could have taken video. The good picture I put my phone in the tank. They were of course in an area where my cams wouldn't pick it up behind Cholla.

Re: Sphagnum Moss VS. Terrarium Moss

I was thinking it may have been a little too wet. This stuff is like a sponge! I did squeeze it pretty good to get most of the water out but maybe not enough. Last night I fluffed it up a bit in two of the tanks. This morning Abby and Mephy we're in it. I saw a purple hunkered down in the other moss...

Re: We Have Strawberry Eggs!!!!

We just met up with Mary and gave Abby to her to get settled! We are all hoping everything goes as we all hope! Everyone is super excited to find out what will happen. Xenocrab and I are both still amazed that she has eggs! We never would have know if I didn't see the two of them together the other ...

Sphagnum Moss VS. Terrarium Moss

We have been using the Zoo Meds Terrarium Moss for around two years in our moss pits. All our crabs in 4 tanks would always hide in it. We heard about how Sphagnum Moss holds moisture better and crabs really love it. We figured we would try it. It deffinately holds moisture better. Since switching o...
