Re: Ecuadorian

Whenever I check the tanks at my local pet stores, they're empty or all the crabs are hiding, so I don't understand how other members here seem to be able to identify when a batch of Es arrive. Is it just that they're so much more active? Trust me, if I ask the employees around here about different ...

Re: John-the world's oldest living hermit crab

That's really amazing. I've been wondering how old some of the hermit crabs are that people keep on this forum. I have heard that they can live 20+ years, so with all the great care that people here seem to provide their crabs, how old have you all been able to successfully raise them to? When I was...

Re: 5 Months

Hi, thanks for the reply! I am very positive that she hasn't been coming up at all. I monitor my other two misfits very closely and all activity is from them. (they are such creatures of habit, I find them doing routine tunnel maintenance every morning, LOL!) Plus, Mona is significantly larger than...

Re: Keeping in the Heat...

Lifting the lid a couple times a day should be plenty of oxygen for them, but I usually leave a teeny opening. :) Cool. My basement dips down to almost 60F at night, so it's been a bit of a logistical challenge keeping the 29 gallon tank in the mid/upper-70 range for the PPs and not take a major hi...

Re: Keeping in the Heat...

I've seen many people refer to wrapping a wire mesh lid in seran wrap, but how much space are you leaving for ventilation in/out of the tank? Am I crazy, or wouldn't covering the lid deny them of oxygen?

Re: Question About Molting Cave

They will backfill as they go, especially when they are molting. They need to be isolated down there and be hard to find since they are unable to move for a while and will be extremely vulnerable. There is enough oxygen exchange through the sub for them to survive. That's good to know! I now feel r...

Question About Molting Cave

One of our new hermit crabs burrowed down soon after coming home, and when we came back a few hours later he was gone, and there wasn't even a hole in the ground where he was digging. It looks more or less like smooth sand again. I am wondering if crabs always refill the holes they dig, or if someth...
