Re: Well Water

Yes, Prime will take care of the heavy metals.

I don’t know what compounds are in your well water, but generally speaking it should be safe to use.

Re: Crabs aren't digging

It feels “dusty” because the finer particles are going airborne. You can reduce the dust by pouring more slowly. Yes, it will feel different. Play sand is basically just that, sand (silica, but all-purpose versions have gravel). The sand from pet stores is marketed for aesthetic purposes only (smoot...

Re: Shipping box for hermit crabs

You’ll have to either make a road trip, leave them behind, or employ a specialized shipping company. https://shipyourreptiles.com https://www.reptilesexpress.com Truthfully, it would be substantially easier to obtain your crabs at home instead of while on vacation. It’d be a lot less stressful for b...

Welcome to the forum!

You’re doing just fine. Hermit crab husbandry is a continual learning process. Just take everything in baby steps and you’ll be a proud parent before you know it.

Yes, he’s fine.

Hermit crabs will stay underground for months on end. Try to be patient, he’ll come out when he’s ready.

Re: My crab is pooping in his water dish!

Hmmmm....so many things that are marketed for hermit crabs aren't actually safe for them. Obviously this hasn't harmed your crabs, but I wonder if it actually does anything beneficial. Personally, I wouldn't use it, but that's just me. The ingredients are listed as 'water, enzymes, bacteria'. Seems...

Re: My hermit crab is handicapped! HELP

Hermit crabs need to dig to molt. For that reason the substrate must be six inches deep or greater. Adequate saltwater is necessary for proper salts and minerals. Zoo Med hermit crab salt does not replicate ocean water and thus will not help them nutritionally. Any product made for marine fish will ...

Re: Leaf litter

There is no official guide to trees on this forum. There are trees listed in the safe foods list. To identify them you’ll have to find other resources. There are hundreds of guides online and in bookstores and libraries. Try looking around to see what you can learn about tree ID. Sent from my iPhone...

Re: How to keep gnats/bugs out of tank?

Has anyone tried carnivorous plants to combat pests? I’ve been thinking about getting a butterwort and placing it somewhere the crabs can’t reach it, but where the gnats will. Thoughts? I’m not sure this will work in the long run. Most pests are breeding in the tank and will be attracted to the foo...

Re: Question about worms?

Dried you can buy in bulk and store long-term in the freezer. Live you have fresher meat but you have to keep it alive until feeding time. If you don’t want to cut them up, you can also offer live if they can’t escape the food dish. Nutritionally, mealworms are primarily protein and fat, which will ...

Re: Water Prep Clarification

Distilled water is not used for pets’ drinking water because it has no minerals. Animals evolved to drink from natural water sources, pure water isn’t good for them. It’s cheapest and easiest to just add a few drops of a dechlorinating agent to tap water. Most of us use that. “Prime” is referring to...
