Food Help

I was just reviewing the food section and I found that most of the food I am currently using may be harmful to my crab! I currently use: -Florida Marine Wildlife Research hermit crab food -Hermit crab cakes (it is in a small yellow bottle, on the list of not good commercial foods in the food page) -...

Re: Rinsing Dishes and Crab Poop/Color

I just looked up what I use for food, here is the link on Amazon, I have been using it for almost a full year now and she absolutely loves it. I use it in conjunction with hermit crab cakes, zoo-med dried fruit (which she loves), zoo-med peanut treats (I don't use them that often, she prefers real u...

Re: Rinsing Dishes and Crab Poop/Color

Interesting, I always assumed spring water is safe for them, I have seen little to no issue with that regarding her, but I will take a look into it! Her substrate is about 4 inches deep currently, and she is just able to dig completely under (she disappeared for about a month back in November/Decemb...

Rinsing Dishes and Crab Poop/Color

Hello all! I have a few questions pertaining to different aspects of my hermit crab. First and foremost, I found out recently that she is actually a female crab! I decided to continue to call her Shelldon considering that is what she is used to, but I have begin to also call her pet names such as "s...

Re: UVB Lighting

Crabs are weird haha, and I do see my Purple Pincher is a lesser active crab, but very into it when he wants to be. He became obsessed with this small log of cholla wood and every time he comes out he's on it or around it for the past few days. He also hasn't touched any of the fresh food I put into...

Re: UVB Lighting

Land hermit crabs are crepuscular, meaning that they come out around dawn and dusk usually; they're fairly nocturnal so they aren't going to come out a lot in the daytime. Sent from my LGMS550 using Tapatalk I have noticed that, my crab is also sometimes very active all day and night, and then will...

Re: UVB Lighting

My LED hood came with a built in night light, not sure if it is an actual moon light or not though. It's only on half of my tank. I generally turn that on after my I turn my daylights off for the evening. I will leave the night light on until I go to bed and may turn it on to see what they are up t...

Re: UVB Lighting

I also had another question regarding moonlights (sorry for being an annoyance!). I've seen people say they should only be used for viewing while some use them all night, mine provides a small amount of heat which is good due to it getting closer to winter here, and its a very dim bulb (I have a har...

Re: UVB Lighting

Since many of our species live closer to the equator in region, I do 12 hours of light. I use UVB and a standard household LED light for their day lighting and nothing at night. Sent from my LGMS550 using Tapatalk What wattage UVB do you use? I'm finding that my crab is hiding out more in his littl...

Re: UVB Lighting

I don't use any light sources at all. My crabs get light from the window. Is there a benefit from adding a light source? I would prefer to just keep doing what I am doing, but if it is better for my crabs, I would invest in lights. I've seen both sides of the spectrum (no pun intended) in lighting....

Re: UVB Lighting

Hello :) Welcome to the HCA! :) Hermit crabs need a day and night cycle. I tend to follow whatever is going on outside. I use UVB, and this is my light source. I do not recommend the All Living Things Lights. I only recommend Reptisun bulbs, preferably the HO ones. I also don't like the moon bulbs,...

UVB Lighting

Hi all! I am brand new to HCA but I have using it for tons of research, so I figured I would join! I am a new crab owner, and have recently been moving Shelldon into a 10 gallon tank with two heaters and a mesh lid (with press and seal on top to keep humidity in). Ever since the switch he has been m...
