Re: Shell overcrowding?

Yes, thank you! I’ve shopped using the shell guide! What a great resource. I just don’t understand how all these shells fit in the tank. I have a 40 gallon and it doesn’t seem like there’s enough space for 35 shells to be scattered about and leave room for water, food, wheel, hides. I’ll look at mor...

Shell overcrowding?

Hi, I’ve had a severe case of shell aggression where a crab was killed. After that horrible event, I have greatly increased the number of shells in the tank. I had 8 crabs, now 7, and had 28 shells, now 35, replaced some less preferred varieties. Is I used to keep them all in the second floor of the...

Re: Crabs streaking in substrate

Oh interesting! My large guy came to me in a magpie, so that was the kind I got for replacements originally. I’ll be sure to get turbos for him.

Re: Crabs streaking in substrate

Thank you for your response!
I have the same suspicion, so I’ve just placed an order for more shells. The sizing in so tricky! I have gradually moved to all turbo and magpie shells. I thought I had a good selection, but maybe some were just too big. Im adding more for the medium size guys.

Re: Empty Shell in Substrate- attacked and naked crab

Thank you for the responses. Unfortunately, he did not recover. I have the doubled-up Tupperware water bowls. Today I found another crab naked in the sand (before I read your response suggesting leaving in the sand) but this one was very active. I did the same procedure as I did with the prior crab ...

Empty Shell in Substrate- attacked and naked crab

Hi, do crabs leave their shells when they molt? I moved the food dish today and found a big cavity underneath which wasn’t there yesterday. A shell previously occupied by a crab the last time I saw it was underneath the bowl and empty. I put a loose layer of sand over it and returned the food bowl. ...

Re: Ask questions about food not included on lists here!

Oh interesting point. I hadn’t thought of that. See? This site is always full of helpful discussions! Believe or not, our beaches heavily deter taking rocks from the beach to protect against erosion. I have a fishing license that also covers lobster and urchin, so I’m pretty sure I’m covered for the...

Re: Ask questions about food not included on lists here!

Hi, thanks for this thread!
I live at the beach and I occasionally see mole crab (sand crab) exoskeletons or fresh bodies on the sand. I have seen other owners offer dried sand crabs to their hermits. I’m wondering if I can collect the fresh ones I see at the beach. Any input is appreciated.

Yep, egg crate or light diffusers is what it's called.

We cut it so it goes to the bottom of the substrate. We also use Flukers tension rods to support the top so crabs can't pull it away at the top.
Very cool! Thank you!!!

Thank you so much!!
Oh I get it, it goes all the way down to the bottom of the tank. Good thing I asked before I put in my substrate!

Yey!!

What is that white climbing grid called?

Hi,
I’m beginning a tank upgrade. I love that whit e plastic grid I see in the background of so many tanks. What is that stuff called? I have “crafting mesh” but that’s not as sturdy.
Also, how do you attach the sturdy white grid to the tank?

Thanks for the input!

Reuse decor from hamster cage?

Hi,
I’m upgrading my tank and bought a used tank. The guy I purchased it from included a bunch of decor items from their hamster. I’ve got porcelain hides, plastic hides, wood bridges with and without metal. Which of these items can I use and how should I clean them?
Thanks so much!

Re: Rehoming because of ant infestation?

Hi All, Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it! I sent along your suggestions about digging up the crabs and cleaning out the tank, so she can keep her crabs. I also offered to take that on for her if it was too much to deal with. I haven’t heard back from her, so I don’t know what...
