Re: Help with reducing clutter?

Alot of people use shell shops. At one point I tried it but on the ground. I tried having only one level of shells. The only thing they used it for was to walk through to get to the other side. When I finally just scattered the shells on the ground there was more interest. But then the shells get d...

Re: Help with reducing clutter?

Thanks! Any concerns considering I'd be basically stacking the shells up in a container for them to crawl to and change with various sizes? Had an unexpected new addition, size of a penny, and a larger one that I had previously adopted. Thought he was much smaller based on shell size, but the poor t...

Re: Help with reducing clutter?

Thanks for the tips. I have so much "stuff" laying around that I'm not using and have tried a second level, but the reality is the substrate is half the tank and that spiderwood I found has worked out pretty well as they all climb around on it and have a few tunnels under to the other side of it the...

Re: Help with reducing clutter?

Looking at both pictures... I may remove the hamster wheel and just add another section of that black plastic "egg crate" material against the glass there for climbing (no room taken up by that) along with just cleaning and piling the shells back into that one corner. That's all I have for ideas. Fe...

Help with reducing clutter?

So, I upgraded before winter to a larger tank... and slowly added more and more. I've improved the water bowls so all crabs can fully submerge (which they still never go all in), but now have an option to. I used to have all the shells in a corner kinda stacked up although I had less at the time. Wa...

Re: Re-mixing old substrate?

The problem is the absolute mass of sand we use - it's never going to be fully bioactive because nothing penetrates that deep into a heavy thickness of substrate. Insects and beneficial bacterial need oxygen, and sand masses have a tendency to be anaerobic (lacking oxygen) just a few inches down. T...

Re: Recommendations from other groups?

Interesting. I have been reading a few different forums and some that have, I'm assuming, been shut down as the posts are years old. Wow how that information has changed over time. So far my two molts were either at the very bottom of the substrate and the other just a little bit above towards one o...

Re: Re-mixing old substrate?

Sorry, I was off the forum for the weekend. With Christmas shopping and the wild stray cat in my garage (long story trying to catch the little creature), sorry it took me so long to answer! You are correct that I have never thrown out all the sub and started again, and it was 9 years in September. ...

Re: Bacteria spray?

I agree that good bacteria is good. But I just wasn't sure if this was legitimate good bacteria because I thought bacteria had to be alive and didn't see how a spray on the shelf would keep them alive. I saw it at petsmart in Indiana. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk I've had success wi...

Re-mixing old substrate?

I actually sent a PM to @curlysister as I'm aware from her posts that she has had her crabs for years and don't believe any full substrate changes were done in this time from what I've read. I currently have all crabs up and with issues of the top inch or so drying out, adding 20 ounces of freshwate...

Re: Bacteria spray?

I use beneficial bacteria in a koi pond. It really helps to keep the water clean/clear and the beneficial bacteria breaks down a lot of waste and organics like leaves falling in the pond. I've been happy with that for years. Curious how long this has been on the market. I can see how adding benefici...

Re: Death Smell... now what?

Well... as not advised typically... given all the circumstances here... I placed the crabs up in a temp tank and shortly l slowly went through a bunch of dry sand looking for the molter. A small guy after about a month or so. I found him at the very bottom close to a corner. He had molted and ate hi...

Re: Death Smell... now what?

Do you have digital therm/hygro? You can seal the entire lid. They won't suffocate. I have a corner open as mentioned mostly to keep the humidity down; I guess I could seal the entire screen. The humidity has always been relatively high in the tank and will shoot up to 90+ (at least it did before w...

Re: Death Smell... now what?

Just going to update this RE my prior post. I sprayed the top of the substrate as it was dry. Between two days I realized I had used the entire spray bottle re-moistening the top inch or so which is 20 ounces of freshwater in a 20G long. Now, I'm back to the top of the sub drying out again! Still ha...

Re: Death Smell... now what?

Thanks! This is kinda unrelated, but still between this post and the bacterial blooms, I have been way overthinking things. I believe, after reading through this and my BB posts, my original guy was trying to molt in the nasty. I setup the 20G L with 50/50 EE/PS post-BB. He was buried and based on t...
