Re: 20g hex for 2 PPs?

Mine dig at least as much as they climb; and as they get bigger, they will spend more and more time underground (Major Tom has been down molting for almost 2 years now; last time it was 18 months). Remember that the volume of molting space is crucial, because if one crab digs down and encounters an...

In the hermit world, molting space is more important than climbing space. Hermit crabs love to dig as much as they love to climb.
Definitely! I was going to add a glass extension at the bottom (it's front opening) so that the sub could be deep enough

Re: 20g hex for 2 PPs?

Did you ever end up making them this setup? Can you post a picture? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Not yet, when I do, I will definitely update! I calculated the terrestrial area it would give them to walk on the actual ground and it's slightly larger than a 10g. But they could have a ton of cl...

20g hex for 2 PPs?

First of all, sorry I've been inactive! My life is a crazy mess right now with moving and school and some other personal stuff like grieving. I am not sure if I have asked this before. If I have, I apologize. I don't currently have this setup for my crabs, but I do have it for some arboreal (social)...

Any ideas/thoughts on second level/increasing vertical space?

I currently have 2 PPs in a 10g and I've read they love to climb. However with the amount of substrate needed it gets very cramped. Do I just need to upgrade my tank to make it work better or what are some ways to have tank toppers (I think that's what they're called) without making it a pain to acc...

I had received dried anole food once that was fruit flies, crabs wouldn't touch it. (Ignoring completely how absolutely horrible a food like that exists for reptiles that need live insects.)
Huh. Interesting. I'm still gonna try it out, but I'll keep that in mind.

I dpubt they'll catch them and eat them while living, but they may be fair game dead - like little protein pockets/seeds.

Good thinking, I'll have to try it! Yeah, I'm thinking now they'll be too quick, especially in the higher temps

Re: Crabitat garden?

I have done this and it was really cool while it lasted. It is pretty short lived but they grow tall fast! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Tall as in leggy? If they're leggy I'm figuring out they need more light for "long term" success (not really possible with hungry crabs  ) looked up the...

Has anyone seen their hermit crabs catch (wingless) fruit flies?

Wondering if I can feed them some and if it's a wise idea to put them in the tank as a cuc because they love rotting fruit. I have 2 tubes full of flightless Drosophila spp. and I'm wondering if they can. If not, I'll freeze some and bake them.

Re: Crabitat garden?

It's fun. :) I am actually making one right now! All you need is some organic raw chia seeds. Last time my crabs kinda tore it apart, so this time I'm growing them outside of the tank to give them a head start. Also, I'm pretty sure they don't last long after sprouting if you put them in a 5:1 subst...

Re: Any feeding tips? Favorite recipes?

Also, do you ever make "to do" lists or keep an engagement calendar? I find when I write a list of things I need to do, I'm more likely to do them. I guess I get satisfaction from checking off what I've completed lol. I always add "change hermit food" or "change hermit H2O" to my lists, to make sur...

Any feeding tips? Favorite recipes?

Alright, so I'm not gonna lie here, I suck at feeding my crabs. I usually just throw something in every couple days. I have a really hard time remembering and also figuring out what will work for them. Anyone got any tips in how to stay organized about feeding? Do you set timers? Feed them while you...

Fast growing plants for vivarium?

Alright, so I just finished setting up a viv for my Mediterranean house geckos, and I want to do the same for my crabs, since I'm looking for some better options for their tank and want it to look mostly if not completely naturalistic. I've read the main post for plants in hermit crab tanks, and was...

Re: Is my crab dead? Cannibalism? Molting?

If every shell is unoccupied and you have reason to believe she may be underground naked, then you may dig, since her soft abdomen is prone to get scraped up by the substrate, but only if you don’t have anyone else underground. Digging up every crab is going to be more pain than it’s worth. Sent fr...

Re: Booming/grunting noise underground (low chirp)

Okay, thank you all so much. I will definitely add more substrate and this has been a very humbling experience. If that one did indeed die, I'll be back in the safe zone as that will leave me with 2 PPs. I thought it was deep enough, but then I actually measured it and realized. Guess I had to learn...
