Re: Mites???
Hi! It's sounds like they are harmless since they aren't attaching themselves to your crabs. Are you offering fresh foods? Maybe you could offer only dry foods to try and decrease the population a bit. Or put something fresh in the tank, wait til there's a bunch on the food piece, then throw them a...

mites going at exoskeletons?
this is a rather odd question, but over the summer i've thought ab it-- do harmless mites and springtails feed off of exoskeleton? a rather random question, i'll be surprised if anyone answers with a guess (or a fact haha). i hope everyone is doing well too! this crabber hasn't been so active due to...
Re: Mites???
Another likely culprit could be springtails. If it isn't them now, you still may see them in the future. It's really difficult to keep them from getting into your tank, no matter how fastidious you are boiling, baking, freezing or whatever. I'm pretty sure I've brought them in on mosses, bark and e...
Re: Mites???
If the mite isn't clinging to the crab (like in the joint areas), is not harmful. I find some in the water dishes sometimes, and they like to hang by the food dishes. I just let the food mites do their thing since they eat leftover food the crabbies have dragged around. [emoji846] Sent from my Moto...
Re: Mites???
thank you, vicky! UPDATE: Now I'm having trouble with flies, or little knat like things (black, darker colour) that I find in the tank (once in a while i'll also find them around my screen, so I assume they aren't predatory). But what do you all think? From what I've read and what you all are tellin...
Re: Mites???
" If you've had your hermit crabs for a while without having added any new crabs to your tanks and suddenly discover mites that weren't there before, it's very unlikely that they are hermit crab mites." I feel like at this point all my suspicious points toward these mites that I encountered being ha...
Re: Mites???
My mother suggested from something she read that I should isolate them all in containers for a week. I have looked at multiple videos throughout the day, and from what it seems the bugs were some type of food mite? They were as big as a grain of sand, and when I bathed the crabs none came off into t...
Re: Mites???
All of them seem to be clear of the little bugs. Just came back with new substrate so I am going to clean out the tank really well with MILD mild soap and water. Could you please give me instructions on boiling the furniture and bathing the crabs? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210608/fb6c59136f...

I got into my account! This is my post ) )
Re: Mites???
On further expectation I see that there are little grey bugs in the sand, but besides the one crab (Jubali, I wrote George Washington on accident thinking of my Ec from a few years ago in my panic), the other two do not have any bugs (as far as I can tell). I am going to have the tank cleaned thorou...

Re: Cost of Hermit Crabs in Your Area
My local pet store sells them for 7 USD for a small crab, but 15 for the ones with painted shells (ugh).

thanks dude B)aussieJJDude wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 4:02 pmA 29g should last them for a number of years, but as they get bigger you may want to upgrade to a larger tank (say a 40g breeder) to keep em happy.
