Re: Baby Hermit Crabs

Awww So tiny and cute! I've been thinking about getting some babies for my tank but it's only a 30 gallon and it already has a colony of 5 so I don't want to over crowd. Maybe when I upgrade I'll get some more little ones, seeing yours just made me want some even more lol

Re: Just sits there

It could be PPDS, but if if it is then theirs not you can do about it other than wait to see. It could also be that she's nervous around the other crabs and just needs time to warm up to them. Another explanation is that she's getting ready to molt. Have you noticed any digging activity nearby? I've...

Re: Dead or molting??

Thanks- is it normal for a crab to not move at all while molting? Staying in the exact same spot for weeks at a time? Yes, this is completely normal. If they were moving then it's not a molt. Also just wanted to add in, If it's an Ecuadorian then add more substrate. Es like to dig a lot more than o...

Betta fish have gone sky high though! Our walmarts used to sell them for $4, but they all stopped. The local chain has their cheapest at $13 now up to $30, and our local shop regularly has $17 ones.
Really? I just picked up one at a local pet smart for 2.50.

Re: Naked crab!!!

Dad-One Your tank looks good for the most part but there are a few things you need to fix (probably the cause of this). -The substrate is too low. Considering this is a 10 gallon tank it looks only a few inches, it needs to be a minimum of 6 inches for them to molt properly, unfor...

Re: So many isopods!

If you want to catch them all at once here's what you do: Get a large piece of rotting drift wood or sheet of bark (preferably damp, but not dripping) and put it in the tank. Wait a few days to a week then take it out. If it's done right then it would make the perfect habitat for the isopods and wil...

Re: Needing Small Shells

Contrary to most other posts in this section, I actually need small shells. I just recently got these guys and they are just barely smaller than a quarter, and finding any shells for them is a pain. One of them in particular is wearing one of those really long and pointy shells, which seems to impe...

Re: Naked crab!!!

Would you mind filling out the entire emergency template? She dropped her shell because there is something wrong in the setup and mold usually wouldn't cause it so it's probably something else.

Play sand does not need to be 'disinfected' before adding it to a tank.
I always disinfect mine anyway since the store I get in from sells a lot of chemicals and leaves it outside year round, not exactly necessary but I lie to be on the safe side.

Re: Sand

Not sure what you mean by grainy but all long as it's all natural then it should be fine. Did you go through the whole disinfecting process?

Re: Naked Crab!

UPDATE: Wow. I just found out what was wrong! You all are going to find this funny. I thought that maybe he just didn't like the shells I was offering in the tank so I got the shells in the isolation tank and switched them with some spares. He went into one of those intimately. I was confused as to ...

Re: THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER

Yup, thanks for letting me know. I bought a lot of shells as soon as I realized that the crabs were in fact not medium. Shipping is taking a while but hopefully they will arrive soon. I do have about 30 shells in the tank but all small-large. Wasn't expecting to need jumbos any time soon but here we...
