Re: Time to decorate my crabititat

Just wondering if there are any fake plants to avoid. I bought a couple of them from Petsmart today and they say they are "safe and non-toxic", but they have what I consider a strong plastic smell, even after washing with soap and warm water. They are aquarium plants. Also got some ZooMed terrarium ...

Re: Cleaning substrate after crab death

Well, no replies (dumb question?) and I've baked the substrate, so I'm going to proceed. Thanks for reading!

Cleaning substrate after crab death

I have a good bit of substrate that I'd used in the isolation tank where we briefly kept our most recent adoptee. He moved into the main tank with our other two crabs, but died within a month. He'd never quite acted right, and I suspect that he'd been mistreated/neglected by his previous owners and ...

Re: Crab sick due to chlorine?

Thanks, Callalily and Wodesorel! I guess it could be time for another molt, especially now that he has his big new home. It is getting harder to find shells for these growing guys! Definitely time to deepen the substrate before they start digging again. :)

Crab sick due to chlorine?

Hi, everyone. My hubby recently purchased, washed and boiled a couple of new shells in tap (chlorinated) water and gave them to our crabs. I was glad to see his excitement (so far he's mostly ignored the crabbies), but wish he'd checked with me on the water first! One of the crabs moved in to one of...

Re: Dead or molting?

Thanks, everyone. I guess I need to put him in his final resting place. Seems pretty clear he's gone, though the fishy smell is mild, at least to my somewhat stuffy nose. Poor little guy. I think he may have had a rough life before he came to us. :(

Dead or molting?

I discovered my most recent adoptee (who had been slow, lethargic, not eating, and found hanging mostly out of his shell in a corner recently) partly buried under a log/hide but limp and lifeless and mostly out of the shell. He looked dead and I could detect a fishy smell and he came out of the shel...

Re: Aggression toward new crab and weird behavior

Thanks for the ideas! Going to track down some of the freeze-dried shrimp, crickets, etc. Since the humans in my household are vegetarian, we don't have much besides eggshells in the way of high-calcium content foods. The Kilimanjaro page is awesome; also going to check out the Food and Water forum ...

Re: Aggression toward new crab and weird behavior

Thanks, YYWW; I will leave Shelly in place for a bit in his ISO tank, since that's where he seems to want to be anyway. Shelly is a bit larger than S.C.; it is amusing to see our little "scaredy crab" going after a larger crab with such determination. As my son says, S.C. may be interested in Shelly...

Ha! CHorse, I can't take credit for the name; that was my son's idea. I will give your idea a try when they are out and about again. Thanks!

Aggression toward new crab and weird behavior

I adopted a PP last month and have been keeping him in isolation because when I put him in the larger tank with my two other crabs, one of them (Sandy Claws) goes after the newbie (Shelly) aggressively, grabbing and turning Shelly's shell and causing him to retreat and hide. I put Shelly in the big ...
