I actually think this will enhance the stronger ones chances of survival.

Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017
So these guys might look cute and make everyone go awwww but nature has a way of bringing everything back to survival. Sadly I found one little guy caught in the fresh water pool. Another was crawling over the top of him. I used tweezers to fish him out just in case but it was clear he had drowned. ...

One of them on the fresh water pool. This is a natural sea sponge in there to stop them drowning.

Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017
Wednesday 28th December Day 25 Well things have been very ordinary for the last couple of days. Little crabs running all over the place. Anytime I look I see between 4 and 13 so not sure how many are still alive. A couple of shells have stayed in one place though so suspect they may be empty. I cou...

Tiny tiny. That white spot on the shell is actually a grain of sand. The "log" its walking on is a stick that is about the size of my thumb (1cm wide)kieagcarm wrote:Oh. My. Goodness. It's a baby crab. How big would you say she is?

Christmas Day 2016 It's official. I have first crabs. I hardly believe it but I have actually managed on my 2nd attempt to raise land hermit crabs (Coenobita variabilis) in captivity. DOH was 4th December 2016. Tonight (Christmas Night) when I looked at photos taken in the last 24hours I feel that ...

Re: Aussie Breeding attempt #2 Dec 2016
Friday 23rd December 2016 Early evening update. I have just got home after being away for 24hrs. First thing I did when walking into the house was to check the babies. :D I was able to count 13 moving around on the sand or the top of the exit ramps. Another 6 or so still in the pools. 2 streakers i...

Re: Aussie Breeding attempt #2 Dec 2016
This is so amazing! And so generous of you to share! I've had one failed attempt this year (U.S.) and am hoping for another shot come summer. I'm wondering, for the new hatchlings, did you keep the light on 24 hours a day like some others have done? Or did you give them regular day/night cycles? I'...

Re: Aussie Breeding attempt #2 Dec 2016
Water changed food added for those still there. Some sprinkled on the damp top of the exit ramps. Heat mats on thermostat. Tank sealed with masking tape to prevent escapees and they will have to fend for themselves for 24hours while I am off north to go scuba diving. They fend for themselves in the ...

Thursday 22nd December Day 19 0730 OK 6 at least (it’s so hard to keep track) on the sand running around climbing things. 5 on the sand ramp out of water but not on land yet. I got some good photos and more video. This is amazing to think that I may have 11 more crabs in a few days time. 1400 2 of ...
