Naked and missing limbs

Tuesday, May 7: Help... one of our seven is without a shell and has lost both pincers and 3 walking legs. Emergency template below: 1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Playsand and eco earth, roughly 5 to 1 ratio, sandcastle consistency (made with half strength MSW), s...

Re: New Craber... needing some wisdom

Welcome! Sounds like you were prepared, which is more than a lot of us when we were new. [emoji16] The long-time crabbers often advise that crabs can stay under for weeks or months. We had one that lived underground, we never saw him except occasionally if I happened to be up at 3AM! You can also tr...

Re: To dig, or not to dig

Sending peaceful thoughts for you! When we switched tanks Digger would not come up. That’s why he got his name, he lived underground and only came up at like 3AM to eat! We watched for signs every day, I think it was a week or so. When we saw a big exit hole we knew he’d been up, so we felt safe dig...

Re: Finally got them switched over.

That is an amazing piece of cholla! Thanks for sharing the info! Tank looks great! Ooooo, I LOVE that huge piece of cholla wood - where did you get it?? I got them on eBay for $16.00 for both of them plus $10 shipping. I thought it was a great deal especially for how big and beautiful the pieces are...

Re: Molting above ground, i may have killed him

Just an update if anyone is curious, he made it. He finished molting under the cup and came out when he was finished. I gave him egg shells, fish, and a fruit and grain mix. He is doing great, running all over the aquarium. Now the other guy is hiding. Maybe he is molting too! That’s terrific! [emo...

Re: Vinegar/cleaning

I bought some Norwex a few months ago and got free samples of the microfiber cleaning cloth and glass cleaning cloth, so decided to dedicate them for tank use. They’re intended to use only with water and they work great! The microfiber has a lot of “tooth” so it scrubs the glass well. I should think...

Crab eating plastic!

Love your tank! May I ask what you have the cuttle bone zipped to? I am really liking that idea! Thanks! We drilled a hole in one end of the cuttlebone and zip tied it to the corner guard (on which Fezzik is napping). They climb on it as well as pick at it. The last one they whittled down to a nub ...

I just read your entire blog on this year's attempt, your documentation, photo, video, all terrific. All y'all who attempt this are heroic! Hang in there. Wish I could bottle some energy and send it!

Re: Crab eating plastic!

I hope this doesn’t sound stupid. Maybe he likes the way it feels, kind of like a puppy chewing on stuff. It looks really pretty, it would be sad to see you have to take it all down. That actually doesn't sound stupid, and wodesorel said her crab would spit it back out. I mean, if you're bored enou...

Re: Crab eating plastic!

Check underneath for tiny pieces of plastic the same color as the plant. I have had bored crabs do this, but they would slyly spit it back out and not actually swallow it. Moya destroyed three plants like this and left little piles under where she sat. Once I upgraded her to a bigger tank she stopp...

Re: Crab eating plastic!

Oh no, I had it happen once three years ago and removed all of the plastic immediately, and just a few months ago I put in some plastic plants, all hard plastic so it would be harder for them to eat. I have not had an problems this time, yet. Do they get leaf litter? And yes, that little corner of ...

Re: Crab eating plastic!

Goodness, that would be a project—it’s one whole corner of the ‘tat, zip tied all over the moss pit which is hang-out central! If it comes down to it, of course I’d do it for their safety... but if they’ll eat plastic, what’s to say they won’t go after any of the other plastic plants? I did a quick ...
