Re: New owner questions

Two crabs will be okay in a ten gal for a while, but I'm sure any crab would tell you bigger is better, lol. You don't really want a tank in direct sunlight because the sun on the glass might heat the tank well above the temp you want it to be. But as mentioned above, sticking them in a closet will ...

Re: Safe to Use?

Do you think using mesh paper, from a grocery store would be safe to use as a burrowing material in a moss container? It's brown, and it looks like a bee hive. I would probably shred it up, and put it in a little container to hide in. I think I know what you're talking about... and I imagine that s...

Re: More Humidity Problems

I think the noise from the bubblers initially puts them off, but they adjust. Now mine will sit dipping their legs in the bubbles, so I assume they're at least okay with it.

If the incandescent worked well, maybe return to that if you can? Different things will work for different tanks.

Just be sure there isn't enough space for a crab to escape... crabs are sneaky.... :smt077

Re: Cleaning top layer

OMG I feel like a newbie! Poop should be removed??!!?? What can happen if it isn't? I swear I have not removed any poop in 7 1/2 years. If you don't remove poop.... you will eventually have a lot of poop in your tank? I mean, if in seven years you haven't noticed it, I doubt its a problem, lol! :lo...

Re: Ecuadorian has super fuzzy tufts on his claws?

Aw, no worries!

Lol, crabs are pretty freaky animals, even when you're used to looking at them... from moult sacs to pleopods, they're custom made to make humans go, "uh, is that NORMAL??"

Re: Cleaning top layer

Cool beans! And hey, if you just dislike the idea of rotting stuff in the tank, go ahead & remove it. This is a thing you live with in your house, so it's up to you. :) Is rotting stuff ok in the tank? It doesn't smell. I think it's a question of preference. I lean towards thinking its okay.... I j...

Re: Ecuadorian has super fuzzy tufts on his claws?

Yup!

The hairy tufts likely help in drawing water up towards their mouths. They also have sensory functions. :D

Re: More Humidity Problems

Then the first thing i'd recommend is that you try adding bubblers. A bubbler in a deep enough pool can often clear up low humidity issues. Here's a link to a thread covering bubbler instalation and such: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=113691&hilit=Bubbler+pics+yo Smalle...

Re: Ventilation?

You could try getting a little cpu fan & making a little craft mesh guard box for it to keep the craboos off. Airflow might reduce condensation. Bubblers improve air flow in a tank somewhat. And you could try drilling a hole or two in the lid if it's acrylic. But the condensation is probably caused ...

Re: Howdy

Just a clarification - be sure that the salt you get is 'synthetic marine salt' and not 'sea salt' like for human consumption. Salt for human consumption isn't the same as what's used in marine fish tanks, as also often contains anti-caking agents that may be harmful to crabs. :)

Re: What is your dream pet to own?

Late to the party, but just for fun: Like wode, I'd love a giant millipede at some point. Keeping rope fish or birchir would be amazing too... I love all the eel-y looking aquatic kiddies. And I dream of getting into dwarf cichlids in a serious way some day. I looked into cuttlefish, but decided the...

I'm not at all familiar with that brand - is it a seed starter mat, for reptiles, or something else?

Let us know how it works!
