Re: Am I providing the appropriate shell selection?
One of my PP crabs wore a gold mouth turbo for three days or so. She did this two separate times, and then changed back over to green turbos or mexican turbos. I think she was just having fun changing shells. I leave my gold mouth turbos in there (only have two), but I don't have plans to buy any mo...

Re: Fungus? Molting disturbance?
I already lightly dipped him in the water pool to wash off the sand and get a better look...turns out it was the sw pool...oops... I might do honey if it starting looking really bad. Haha, I've been considering a 29-30gal! The problem is that I'm a college student and move a lot between school and ...

Re: Crab Rescue - florida
OK, so rescues were added to main habitat, 2 of the 3 are doing great and fitting in. The biggest one which is a medium I think turns out to be a bully. He backs the other hermies in corners and rolls them around, scaring the poo out of them.....Well, I gave him a week to try to be a team player, b...

Re: Completely New to Hermit Crabs
Just wanted to give an update about my tank and crab(s). I have had no more problems at all with humidity. It consistently stays 85-88 and that includes cutting down spraying to about every other day. I think the bigger baths and more plastic wrap did the job. My crab was still hiding a lot and not...

Here's a link to the HCA care sheets, in case you haven't read them yet. http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=51 Have a look and see if you have questions, we'll be happy to help! You mentioned that you have a cage for them, which if you're tropical with no A/C, this should be fin...

Re: Temperature and Humidity
No that's not true. There's no set schedule. The little guys can molt as often as back-to-back which seems like forever, but really their molts are 1-2 weeks long. The bigger guys will molt every month to every other. And the huge might molt 2-3 times yearly. And the larger the crab, the longer the...

Can anyone tell me if GE silicone 1 is safe? I'm seeing online the people have used it for aquariums The basic GE silicone with no additives for mold prevention, coloring, etc. is considered by folks who are members of HCA to be safe for aquariums, but there are higher strength silicones out there....

Re: Heat advice: should I use an extra Zoo Med UTH?
IMO, the ZooMed is useless, I would not even try to use it. It's probably great for keeping some other animal's belly warm, but they usually don't do much if anything for crabs. To increase temps in your tank, if you determine it's needed (I can't answer if it's needed or not), I'd increase your the...

Re: Temperature and Humidity
Welcome to HCA!!! One last thing to consider - do you live on this tropical island all the time? If you'll be flying home at any point, you'll need to check airline restrictions for shipping crabs or carry-on as live pets. If they go in the cargo compartment (where airlines often put cats/dogs, etc...
