Re: What do your crabs enjoy?

Popcorn is definitely my crabs' #1, no doubt about it. I offer it almost everyday because it's always gone in the morning. Honey and coconut oil are also quite popular. They like the flowers I offer them (roses and pansies) more than the leaves (birch). Finally, as far as protein goes, it's gotta be...

Re: Two straws and an E under at the same time-- I'm worried

Thank you guys for your kind words and reassurement. :)

My sub started at 10" but I definitely think that it's shrunk to around 8". Would you recommend doing the 1" per day thing to get it back up?

Two straws and an E under at the same time-- I'm worried!

Hi guys, I know there's literally nothing I can do but wait but I am very anxious about this and wanted to vent to people who can relate. I have my tiny E uder now at the same time that my two straws are down. (For those who might wonder, I went ahead and got a replacement for the deceased straw bec...

Re: What size shells should I make available?

You're welcome. :) Yep, measuring the shell opening is the best way. Basically, it needs to be big enough to let them retract into the shell and fit all their limbs. Although, sometimes they'll pick shells that are too small or too big. It's far far far away from an exact science lol. They're nonsen...

Re: What size shells should I make available?

They sound tiny! Crabs that small grow quickly. The more shells, the better. However, I'd say a minimum of 10 so it's 5 for each of them in graduating sizes. I wouldn't go any smaller than what you have now but you should get a few in 1/2 inch in case they hate their current shells and esp if they'r...

Re: Topper for a 40 gallon tank. [Any know issues?]

I just put the topper on and added some black duct tape just in case around the seam where they meet. The weight of the topper makes it sturdy. If you end up going with a lighter tank or want to be extra careful, I've read that other people have added Velcro. If I had children or a large dog, I migh...

Re: Topper for a 40 gallon tank. [Any know issues?]

You're welcome! Yes, I have a 75g that's topped with a 40g breeder. They're both 18 inches wide so it was perfect. I bought the 40g first when i bought my two jumbo crabs but then quickly found this site, which made me realize they needed a much bigger home. They lived in the 40g for 4 or 5 days unt...

Re: Topper for a 40 gallon tank. [Any know issues?]

I was surprised how hard you have to hit the bottom pane of glass to get it to break! You have to get pretty violent with it lol. But, overall, I thought it was pretty easy and straightforward. You take off the black trim with a razor blade or putty knife, break out the bottom, scrape off all the si...

Re: Monster shells?!?

Although, to be honest, I just looked at the pictures you posted of your guys and, in my opinion, you might be measuring wrong. If they're not even tennis ball sized yet, they probably don't need 2" opening shells. A 2" opening shell is quite massive. The following are pics of a currently unused jad...

Re: Monster shells?!?

Not to worry, when you know exactly where to look, finding shells for them isn't too difficult. :) they do cost more: on average $7-15 each though. I'd recommend the seller MyGANN (found on Amazon and Etsy, also has their own website too but isn't as helpful as their Amazon/Etsy listings) and Richar...

http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=9253 The article above discusses Post Purchase Syndrome, which is likely the reason the crab passed. They're rounded up in the wild and shipped all over the world before they get home to you and, sometimes, the damage/dehydration/starvatio...

Re: Anyone regret getting a big tank?

I have a 75 gallon with a 40 gallon topper on a stand. I'm a taller girl at 5'8" and can easily access the small 12" that isn't covered by the topper but definitely have a small ladder for accessing anything else. Like wode, I use tongs but also one of those arm extender trash picking up pinchy thin...

Re: Aaaand now I have strawberries-- story and questions

Unfortunately, the bigger of the crabs passed last night. It happened quickly. Although he was in a blind spot from the camera when he abandoned his shell, he was alive when I went to bed around 11 and was smelly when I found him this morning. The other crab was doing well before he buried a couple ...
