Re: A Couple Of Crabby Questions

They can and do drink saltwater as a source of minerals.

Re: Where can I find a strawberry crab?

Strawberries are rarely imported. Unless one pops up on Craigslist or a pet store decides to try out some new stock you’re going to have trouble finding one.

Re: Test Run: Garlic?

My tank has a relatively neutral smell (for a crabitat) and the garlic dissipated on its own. I think I’m okay ;)

Re: Microgreens

Microgreens aren’t a special variety, they’re just regular vegetables harvested right after sprouting. They’ll grow into full-size plants with time and care.

Re: Powdered Gecko Diet?

It doesn’t look harmful and I think the crabs would like it. However, it is low on protein, which is curious considering the peas, mealworms, whey, and soy. Maybe it’s mostly banana? If insects make you squeamish, you can dry dried shrimp or krill, or go to the dog and cat food section for dried mea...

Re: Hikari Crab Cuisine?

Fisheries raise shrimp on supplements from birth to death. Shrimp, however, don’t live as long as hermit crabs, so while there’s plenty of evidence of short-term benefits we don’t know how it affects them long-term.

I doubt it’s harmful, though.

Re: Disturbed Hermit Crab during 'intermolt'/Anecdysis phase.

I don’t think you did any permanent damage, but he was resurfaced before he was ready. If you have other crabs with him he’ll have to be isolated for protection, either in his own tank or a half soda bottle pressed into the substrate around him. He can return once he’s walking around and eating as n...

Re: Dim Lighting

The problem I’ve had with night lights is they don’t actually mimic moonlight. They’re too bright and are just different colors (usually red or blue), which is fine for watching the crabs but not quite built for long-term lighting. Perhaps you could try dimming one? Re: Dim Lighting

I’ve seen some using moonglo bulbs outside the tank but facing in. Those are going to produce some heat. That’s all I know of. Perhaps others here know of more options. Edit: I bet there’s an led option with very low heat Moonglo bulbs are too bright on their own. I used to use one for night viewin...

Re: Molting spots

What do you mean? Usually they dig themselves a small cavern and sit there until they’re hardened enough to dig.

Re: Backyard SUPPLIES!!!!!!

I wouldn't put any pine wood, sticks, cones, or needles in the tank. Also check the specific plant name against the unsafe food list to just double check everything. I wouldn’t use fresh wood or needles, either, but the cones are okay. They don’t produce fumes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Any idea why? Are there ingredients we should be aware of?

Re: Hikari Crab Cuisine?

My own crabs ate nothing but commercial pellets for the first eight years I had them. After a few conversations behind the scenes I’ve also been wondering if we’re making a bigger deal out of commercial food than necessary. I’ve been reintroducing pellets back into their food rotation. I don’t feed ...

A naked crab is always an emergency. Being underground doesn’t change that.

However, if you don’t know where the other crabs are then digging would be risky. I personally wouldn’t dig for that reason.
