Re: Dead crab?
I don't know if this is a good idea, but maybe you could get a toothpick or something and move its legs and claws around to see if it moves

Re: 150g topper and spruce up
I have thought of adding toppers like that but I and my mom don’t know if it is safe. Especially with a big family include two kids who are under 6 yrs old. Nice set up!

Re: Substrate
Im probably not what you would experienced, but I can tell you some that I know. Some more experienced crabbers use a 5:1 raito of playsand to ecoearth. My crabs love the eco earth and I also didn't buy enough sand so my mixture is around 4:3-4 (playsand to EE) More EE can make it a higher chance to...

Re: Heating help
We have our heaters hooked up to a thermostat we purchased from amazon for around $20. You put a probe from the thermostat into the tank, plug the heater into the thermostat, plug the thermostat into the outlet, and set what your high temperature limit. The thermostat will control the tank from get...

Re: Fresh Oak branches
Thats good. I once worked really hard on a coconut hut, and it got moldy within a few days (I didn't soak it as described). The hermies loved it but I had to throw it out.

It might help to prevent mold by soaking the wood in declorinated salt water for 24 hours

Re: New Hermit crab owner
Congrats on the new crabs! If you don’t want to get a glass lid you can use something like plastic wrap. If you get the brand of heat mat Xenocrab mentioned but you can’t insulate it, you can wrap tinfoil around a peice of cardboard.

Re: Bugs !!
I just brought 1 of my crabbies up & he's dead, out of but next to shell. I saw a lil clump at edge of shell, examined w/ magnified glass, TINY white worm like spots slightly moving. I have 2 more in tank, freaking out !! ??????????!!!! It might be helpful to give your other crabs a saltwater bath,...

Re: Heating help
My house varies so much with temperatures - the only way I could keep the temp in the tank a decent range was to have multiple UTH's. I have two on the back and one on each side. My tank is upstairs in a room in our old farmhouse, no air conditioning for summer, and baseboard electric heat for wint...

Re: Crabitat tank journal
Nice job on the tank! I would think that the shells might fall, but if you want them out of the sand you can put them in another plastic container. Are you still gonna use the pvc pipe?

Re: Pools losing water?!
All you really do is check around each side of the tank but sliding a knife against the glass and in the sand and you wiggle it around a bit. It should leave a gap and if the sand is flooded water will probably fill the gap in a few seconds. I think with a straw (you would need a strong one) you jus...

Re: Pesticides and Fertilizers
If the trees and plants were sprayed 3 months until I use anything would that be safe? I would love to take the hermits out on a nice day or maybe use some plants for the tank.
