Re: Male Or Female? (Pics)

****Update:
I got a clearer look before I was ready to put Cora back in the tank. Cora was extending out of her shell more than she was earlier. I saw two distinct little tiny dots, like I have seen in pictures & vids over the internet. It’s a girl! (For sure) :cheer:

Those photos are not clear enough, nor is it's last set of legs rotated in the right direction, to see if there are gonopores.

Male Or Female? (Pics)

I took pictures of my little hermie in a plastic tank while cleaning out its crabitat today. He/She reached up very far while he/she was climbing. I figured these would be good pictures to determine the sex. I see hole-like marks but I'm not sure whether they are gonopores or just part of its anatom...

Re: Tank Size And Heating

I would like to add to my post-I have read that hermit crabs do not need light and that it’s important that the tank is not too bright for them (hence why I bought the moonlight bulbs for 24 hour use).

Tank Size And Heating

I just purchased a larger tank from the pet shop. It was really difficult shopping because the clerks were super busy and I had to place my order over the phone (due to Covid). I purchased a 15 gallon. It is 24 1/4 inches length, 12 1/2 inches width, and 12 3/4 inches high (I hope I got that right)....

Re: Play Sand

Also, I wanted to give fair warning and let other crab owners know-I read the amazon reviews for a product-one that was recommended on this thread-Flukers Hermit beach sand is the product. A lot of people who left the reviews said that their crabs died within a few days of using it. I would definite...

Re: Play Sand

Ps. In the meantime, I really need to change my crab’s bedding. Due to product availability at my local pet store, as well as misinformation from the store clerk, my crab currently has the wrong kind of bedding. Can I just use two bricks of coconut fiber for now? Also, I am unsure whether or not to ...

Re: Play Sand

I am having the hardest time with this substrate thing. There seems to be no solution. There is no way I can lift let alone store a 50 lb bag of play sand, and also I can’t afford the prices for the small readily available bags. I have four pets some of whom are on a special diet...it’s a lot financ...

If there isn't an MSDS (material safety data sheet) for it, I wouldn't.

I also wouldn't overpay by that much. That price is nuts!!

You’re right. It is too expensive. Also, the price had gone up since I posted this.

Re: Play Sand

Thank you for the replies all. The reason I ask is because I was all ready to check out on amazon, then I read a comment in the Q & A section that got me wondering. It read, “Is this sand tested for contaminants such as lead and asbestos?” And the seller was not able to answer yes or no definitively...

Play Sand

I have heard that the calcium sand intended for hermit crabs from pet brands like “Flukers” are not safe so I am purchasing play sand from amazon. However, my problem is this-At least with the pet products you know what you are getting. How can one guarantee that the play sand they order is non-toxi...

Re: How Am I Doing? (New Owner) Pics Included-Crab is Hiding

So here is a rundown: -I have a 10 gallon tank Curly - This size of tank will be fine for a while with one or two crabs. See the care sheet re- number of crabs in what size of tank. -I have one dish for fresh water -I have another dish large enough for her to submerge with salt water conditioner ma...

Re: How Am I Doing? (New Owner) Pics Included-Crab is Hiding

Curly and avamin2005 gave great advice, and I agree with them as well as JoeHermits! Awesome job overall though so far! P.S-- It can be difficult to determine a crab's sex, especially if you just got them or haven't had them a long time (they have to come out of their shell at least partically and ...

:cheer: That’s reassuring to know. Yeah it’s been well over 10 days now and he/she still doesn’t come out (during the day at least).
