Is it eggs?

This area is dedicated to the pioneers who have captive bred crabs, and for those who wish to learn more or attempt it themselves. Also for inquiring about the gender of your crabs.

Is it eggs?

Post by CrabMommaChara » Mon Jun 10, 2019 4:46 pm

So, I found some tiny white specks in my water dish today and I'm very confused. Are these eggs? Mites? Sand? They've never been there before, and I am quite confused!

Whatever it is, I washed it out, replaced everything and cleaned every. single. freakin. thing. crisis averted!

Hermit crab eggs look like pink or gray fish eggs. You’d recognize them immediately.

Small white flecks could potentially be small animals, like mites or springtails, or nonorganics, like mineral sediments. It’s hard for me to say without pics. Were they floating or on the bottom?

I’m guessing they’re either food mites or springtails, both commonly found in households and completely harmless to crabs.

Well that's not good! Does washing the water tank, all the items, and all the exposed crabs, and removing all sand with hints of it clean it away?

No, because they will come right back. The tank is a perfect environment for them, and in exchange they keep mold and rotting food away.
