Cannibalism

Post by Julsie » Mon Mar 30, 2020 7:59 pm

I have 10 hermies. All but 2(maybe 3) are burrowed. I see a lot of posts that hermies will eat other hermies who are molting. Should I be worried that could happen? Or is that only a thing when one crab is molting and another one isn’t.

I'm no expert, but as long as you have enough substrate and food they should be fine. Seeing your tank from the other post I think they're ay-okay (maybe try to shoo Big Poppa away from the food if he's camping, though, so the other crabbies can eat )!

Molters generally try to avoid each other. If everyone has plenty of space and food cannibalism usually isn’t an issue.

Cannibalism generally happens when you don't have deep enough substrate for a molting crab to bury properly. When they shed their exo the crab releases a smell that other crabs find appealing and seek out. As long as you offer a proper diet for your crabs you shouldn't have much to worry about. Lack of calcium's and animal proteins will raise the chance of your crabs becoming Dahmer's, Gein's, or Fish.
