The Shell Removal Experiment
Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
For sizing I would like everyone to use these guidelines. Also would anyone volenteer to be a control group. The only thing you would need to do is observe shell intrest and any shell changes or frequency.

Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
My only thing is I currently have only one crab. I'm worried that will mess with results but then again I guess it's a form of control for shell competition idk
So I'll do it if you think that'll be okay, it sounds fun! I'm just bad at committing lol I don't know if I'll remember to record it every week
Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
It could be in a way. It would be your choice. And I do realize some people do keep singletons. Yours would be more of a control or if you chose to remove shells you would be able to document intrest or lack there of easier.

Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
Yeah I think I'll participate as a control. I think there should definitely be another control for a larger colony size as well. I'm excited to see results in a year or so
Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
Hopefully some more people will be intrested. I get there hesitancy. It is also why I started for a while before posing it on the board. It was more of an idea of enrichment but got me thinking.w h a l e b o n e wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 7:19 pmYeah I think I'll participate as a control. Mystery Shell:
I came home today to find a small empty green turbo in the tank. All crabs are safe and accoubted for in their own shells so i do not know where the mystery one came from. I suppose it is possiable I missed one a crab drug off somewhere.

Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
Oh Lord I'm scared! Give me some time to mull this over, I have 9 crabs who I can no longer keep track of. I don't know who's who anymore besides the few who have really striking colors. I am at least very interested in this experiment and I believe that it is beneficial!

Can I go ahead and add some shells? Strawberry and cookie and teeny size and still in painted shells. I’ve had them a few days now and they might be de-stressing so Id like to see if they’ll change. Plus I just got more shells. Here’s all I have now.

The choice is yours. It does not have to be Friday. It could be Thursday Night through Saturday Morning. Would be about the same time.Links wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 6:51 pmCan I go ahead and add some shells? Strawberry and cookie and teeny size and still in painted shells. Re: The Shell Removal Experiment
Once we get some more solid data going I might be willing to try this on my smaller tank. I’ll definitely keep an eye over here, and let you know if I do start! Great research work!

I am doing my best. I have my small tank. I have 1 other person willing to try. I dont have a control group but anyone on the forum with a normal tank could theoretically be a control.Overmountain1 wrote:Once we get some more solid data going I might be willing to try this on my smaller tank. The Shell Removal Experiment
I can gladly do that; give me maybe a week to get everything and everyone moved around (except maybe molters or whatever!) I’m finally setting up my 72 gal bowfront- it’s only taken us a year....
I’d be happy to be a control group. I will have a good mixed shell-preference group to use I believe. I think this is important, and maybe we even find leaving one extra someplace in case of emergency and then the options come out every so often is a good way too.... idk! There are many different ways this could be tried and I think it is great to see what we can figure out. (With no crabs harmed in the process Obvs!) I’ll be in touch!
