Minnows

How would I go about feeding freshly killed minnows?
I would suppose that you cannot get them from a pet store, as they are unhealthy, and possible factors affect their health depending on water quality.

I would like to try little tiny fish, easy enough for them to "find" somewhere in the tank, and eat it.
Thoughts?

Maybe consider sardines? A lot easier to find, and a lot less likely to carry diseases.

Could they be fresh from a lake, or even sold live?
I will take a trip to my local seafood store, maybe they'll have goodies!

Sardines are marine, and normally found near the tinned tuna and whatnot....

Some petstores/fish pet stores have a fridge with frozen goodies. I've often seen frozen packs of little minnow-y type fish. (You can also get frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, daphnia... lots of crab friendly foods.)

Just check the ingredients list, as always when buying fish food for any invertebrate pets, because quality can vary from brand to brand. (Hikari frozen foods tends to be a brand I'd trust.)

Would there be any way of getting a live minnow, and allow it to die by sitting out in the air?
I would like to feed my crabs a freshly caught minnow that would be safe for them.

Fish should be killed humanely, not left to slowly suffocate. Suffocation is slow and painful. You can use a knife to cut its head off, I suppose.

Pet fish should be euthanized using clove oil added to the water (not in the main tank, obviously! - use a container with tank water in it) but I assume clove oil has the potential to harm crabs if ingested.

I am referring to how the fishermen do it and harvest their fish that way.

I would guess that the volume of a commercial catch precludes best practice in terms of humane euthanasia. They don't allow fish to suffocate because it's kinder, rather because the longer the fish is alive, the fresher it will be at market.

I'd personally choose a method that was quick in order to be humane - there's no reason not to if you aren't operating on a commercial scale. You're handling a small number of fish in your kitchen, at your leisure, after all. If you want to preserve freshness just put the fish on ice once you've dispatched it. (Your crabs won't mind - I promise! )

How about feeder goldfish? They're used to feed bigger fish and such. Although the humanely killing part still applies.

I am just not sure if that's safe, many of them have illnesses from the store.

Really, any fresh fish from the grocery store or even thawed from frozen will provide the exact same nutritional value as a fish you kill. There isn't any added value to this way of feeding that I can think of.
