Should hermit crabs have crickets everyday

Post by Joshua183 » Mon Aug 13, 2018 3:50 am

Hi their, my hermit crab had a cricket yesterday and they enjoyed it. Is it normal to feed them crickets everyday or just like every 3-4 days. Will hermit crabs get harmed from everyday crickets.

As long as its pesticide free and you supplement it with other food sources, I dont see the harm.

I would personally not, for if you feed a meal too much, the crabs will not eat it as much, even if it used to be their favorite food.
One or hopefully two Clypeatus
Goodbye my little E. See you soon.
Bye Fred. You lasted almost 4 years with me. Hope you're with my E now! See you soon Reeba as well. I can't believe I lost you only after a month.

I try to mix up all of their food at least every other day. On occasion I may add crickets twice in a row but then will try to keep them off the menu for a week. I try to think of their food like our leftovers. The original meal is great. Lunch the next day isn't bad. Dinner the following night, good it's about gone. Lunch the next day, what else is there to eat? I'm sure the crabs are the same way!

Eventually they may stop eating it, but offering it daily won't be negative... crabs seem to know what they need, so as long as you feed a variety, they will be fine.

I'm new to the hermie scene still.... are the crickets live or dead when you offer them to the hermies? It seems like a dumb question... but I've been wondering.

I believe everyone here gives their crabs dried crickets and pretty much all other proteins such as meal worms, fish, shrimp, and meats. It's much easier to offer them 2-3 dried crickets then having to keep live ones too.

Some of us have live Isopods in our tanks to help eat waste and scattered food. I heard of people seeing their crabs hunt them to eat but I have never see it. I believe live cricket's are safe but would probably get annoying if they start chirping at night.

I’m not sure I’d offer live crickets. They’re considerably faster than isopods or hermit crabs—and can bite.

Hello :) Definitely don't offer live crickets. They can get out of hand very quickly. (As can isopods)

P.S. As a side note - I practically eat the same thing every day and I'm alive. :P If it's healthy and good for you - do it!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
