New tank and needs to be cleaned
New tank and needs to be cleaned
So I was given a 60gal tank and wanted to know the safest way to clean it. And if I use Bleach or something will it wash out completely

Re: New tank and needs to be cleaned
Ugh, not fun.
I use either bleach or ammonia (never mix them!) on bad tanks. I found ammonia works better if you can handle the smell. Rinsing completely will leave them crab safe.
You may want to scrape it down with a razor blade and water first. Don't scrub the dirty glass, it will make any scratches that much worse!
Edit: are you sure 60? Looks like a 75.

The guy who gave it to me told me a 60. Is there a way to really find out

Take measurements! They're all standard sizes

I recommend ammonia, the smell is a bit musty, just don't breathe it heavily!
I can personally handle the smell, I spilled some in my room, and had to sleep through the odors.

I have tried CLR before. It does need rinsed very well and washed with soap after. If a razor blade doesn't touch it though the CLR may not do much. The glass is often pitted at that point and nothing will fix it.

Cool thank you! I cant wait to get this tank set up. I have a 10gal with 2 crabs and an Iso tank with a crab that lost most its legs in January and is ready to be put back in with the others.

I have found that a fresh lemon cut in half does wonders!! AussieJJDude recommended that to someone once - and since then, I use that for aquariums that I have found. Scrub it with the lemon. It's crazy - the natural acidity in the lemon cuts through those hard water stains! Good luck!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

So I tried lemon, a razor blade, and CLR nothing worked. Oh well with the substrate being at least 8" it will come up to the calcium line.

Lemons are good for cleaning out your sinks. Whenever we use lemons or oranges, we throw the pulp and peel down the drain, and run the disposal. Gives it a really strong citrus smell!

I dunno, I kind of like the fact that ammonia will burn off all those pesky nose hairs.aussieJJDude wrote:lus that fresh lemony smell! Beats bleach anyday IMO!

Re: New tank and needs to be cleaned
I used the half lemon on the calcium scale in my 90 & was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked (though the glass wasn't at all pitted, so I can't say if it would do the trick in that instance.)
