Sand moisture

Post by Josh_sexton117 » Tue Oct 16, 2018 1:55 pm

So I'm in the process of trying to set up a 75 gallon aquarium, and I'd like to know how much saltwater you add per 50 pound bag of sand

I just add water and mix until it's the right consistancy. But I'm sure it's several gallons.

Are you adding EE too? Just add a little water at a time until you get sand you can build a castle with....you don’t want it too wet to where if you squeeze it drips.

If you are adding EE that already has some moisture in it so you won’t need to add as much water to the sand....at least that was my experience.

There will be some EE, but maybe only a brick. Thanks folks, I'll give it a shot

I start with a half-gallon of water per bag of sand. Depending on the sand and the weather sometimes that is enough, sometimes it needs more.

When I set up my 75 I mixed in two 5 gallon buckets. I added 3 quarts of sand and 1/2 quart of EE then approximately 1/4 of a gallon of water. And mixed it well. Then added added 2 more quarts of sand, 1/2 quart EE then a little more water.

I used about 6 gallons of water for approximately 250 lbs of sand and 1/2 of a large bag of EE. That got me approximately 8 inches of substrate when it was put in. Eventually it settled and have about 7 inches now.
