Substrate with dry patches?

Post by Plasmoc » Tue Dec 18, 2018 10:57 pm

Hi! My hermit crabs were digging up a storm and making big hills in their tank so I added more Eco Earth substrate to the tank (10 gallon) and moistened it to sandcastle consistency, mixing it all around with the old substrate (Eco earth mixed with some sand). The sand isn’t really visible anymore so I need to get more.

Humidity is holding at 80%, but I noticed some random dry patches in the substrate. 2 almost immediately went down after the addition. I don’t want to dig them up, but i’m a bit worried about them. Will their tunnels collapse because of the dry patches?

Ugh, I’m so tired. That is the same side. Here’s another side.

Wouldn't worry too much. EE is pretty absorbent, and will probably become moist over the next couple of days/weeks as the tank settles in.

As long as the majority isn't dry, I wouldn't see an issue in it.

Ok thank you!

It seems to be holding tunnels fine in the wet areas, I can see them digging around. I just worried what would happen if they hit a dry patch. I’ll be sure to keep up with spraying it down to boost the moisture in the substrate.
