Tank Size

Post by Scarletfire » Mon Aug 19, 2019 7:13 pm

3 crabs have recently come into my care. I don't want to take down my crab adoption local ad, particularly if they don't want their crabs anymore, and I want to ensure they go to a good home. On the other hand.. I'm running out of space. I have a 50 gal tank with 8" substrate. I need to top off the sand, but I have an issue with one of the most recent ones right now.

Total crabs currently inhabiting the tank: 1 large, 2 medium, 3 small, 2 tiny. I'm still waiting for 3 crabs to come out of a 10 gal that I adopted 3.5 weeks ago. I don't know how big they are, but the 10g is 5" deep. I have an extra 30 gal and 10 gal, but they need to be set -up.

Would it be better to just make the sand in the main tank deeper and add a 30g as a topper, or to set up a second 30g?

OOOH! We have been here several times! I couldn't tell you how many times we upgraded tanks sizes or added a smaller tanks only to upgrade them to house more rescues and adoptions. We started with a 20 tall about 3 years ago with 4-5 crabs. Now we have two 29's, 30, 55, and 75 with 38 crabs at the last count!

This is a basic guide to how many crabs for the space you have.

This is JediMasterThrash's extremely detailed rundown of Crabs Per Gallon guideline. This should really help you determine your situation.

I told myself when I first started that I will never get to the point where I need to think about how many crabs I have. I also thought, I'm not going to have any more than 4.So after reading the guideline, I completely forgot about it, and only thought of the basic one. Well, I'm more than 4 in such a short time.

By the way, how do you have space for all the tanks? Do you use any two level stands?

The tanks are in different rooms. Added a 10 gallon tonight for the zoea we found this morning! Once we find our own house we are planning to make a bedroom into a crab room. I would love to find a huge tank 250 gallons or more so we only need 2 or three tanks

A 250 or more is my dream too. I'm thinking of having my husband build one from scratch. And the stand of course too. Lol.

I took in a 100 gal today x.x this will be interesting. I'm not sure whether I should set it on the floor, or find a TV stand. Set up would include a 30gal topper.

I don't know if a tv stand would be strong enough.

That tank alone will weigh more than a hundred pounds empty, and then at least 800 pounds after everything is added into it. The best idea would be to find a metal or wooden stand that is rated for aquariums, or a large table that can support a lot of weight.
