How much substrate to purchase for 20 gallon long tank?

Post by LlamaSeal » Sat May 30, 2020 11:10 pm

I’ve been considering upgrading my 10 gallon to a 20 gallon long, and was wondering how much substrate I needed. I’m planning on having about 6 inches of substrate.(higher/lower in places for variety)

I was thinking of purchasing a bag of 20 kg play sand (about 44 pounds) and a brick of eco earth. Is this enough to fill a 20 gallon long tank to 6 inches?

On a side note, would it be a bad idea to reuse the eco earth that is currently in my 10 gallon? By the time I set up the 20 gallon, the substrate will be around 3 months old.

Generally it’s about a bag and a brick per ten gallons, so two of each should be plenty.

And yes, you can reuse substrate.

I'd recommend using the substrate from the 10 gallon on the surface. If there is food or poop hidden in it, it's better to leave it up top where there is plenty of air circulating.
