Temputure

Post by Cordj3700 » Sat Aug 08, 2020 7:59 am

Hi, so I have a 10 gallon tank. I have a fluckers heating pad on the side. I did not have a glass lid but a screen lid. So covered the screen lid with cloth and saran wrap. Humidity is fine but I can not seem to raise the temperature. I do know what else to do.

is the heat mat on the back or the side? if it's on the side maybe get a bigger one you can put across the back. ideally the largest one that will fit across the back without sticking out

I have one on the side the smaller sides. So getting a bigger mat and putting it on the longer sides might work?

You could either get a bigger mat for the back (long) side of the tank. Or you could try insulating over the heat mat (the ones with a sticky side can not be insulated over). I have also put a folded up blanket on top of my plexi glass lid to help hold in heat.

Yes that should help, or the insulation like Curly mentioned. insulation may be easier esp if you only need to raise it a couple degrees. if you need to raise it a LOT you could even do back + side but that probably wouldn't be necessary this time of year unless your home is very cold.

what temps are you getting currently?

We have central Ac which is left on 67. So even with the heating mat its in the upper 60s. The humidity in the 80s. I have been trying to lower it since its been 90 at times. I just can seem to raise the temperature in there. I don't know if its the thermometer. I have a zoo med one. I am looking into getting a acurite one, heard they are good.

ok yeah you'll want to raise that to at least the upper 70s for your crabs. I'd recommend at least a bigger mat + maybe adding insulation since your house is cooler. the humidity is fine even in the 90s though as long as you are not having mold issues etc.

wouldn't hurt to change the thermometer if you're not sure of the accuracy. I have an AccuRite room monitor, it was a little pricey but works well.
