Info overload! btw hello :)

Post by dorkamongus » Mon Sep 03, 2018 8:41 am

Just wanted to say hello and come out of hiding lol I've been reading over these forums and the abundance of info on the "interwebs" about crab caring I'm slightly overwhelmed. I'm married with 3 kids 2 dogs a cat and 2 pythons. I've convinced my husband to letting me add some crabs to our zoo as he has his snakes. We've done fish, beardies, and turtles in the past so I thought crabs would be easy-ish and I have concluded that they are but getting going and maintaining is the hard part? (here comes me rambling)
I have a 40 gal tank already and a large heating pad as well as a UVB light. I've been researching for the past couple months and I've been buying items here and there my plan is to get all the essentials and tank set up and running for a few days to make sure heat and humidity stay consistent before either buying from our local mom and pop store (they take in rescued/traded exotics/crabs) or finding some that need re-homing locally, haven't had luck on that as of yet but the store does keep theirs next to perfect. Aside from the tank, heater, and UVB, I have 2 plastic coconut shaped hides, 2 medium shallow dishes for water and 2 smaller shallow dishes for food, a small reptile bowl (about the size of a tea saucer) I was planning to use for moss, both treatments for water, 3 blocks of coco fiber and a bag of play sand. All that's left to get are the air pump, lines, air stone, moss, food, greenery and shells and climbing toys. I have a cart filled with that stuff on etsy and petco and a thermostat on amazon.
I do have some questions,
1)We have a screen top for the tank and a piece of plexi-glass cut so it fits perfectly on top I was thinking of covering the screen in plastic using it as the lid since we also have the clips and cutting the plexi-glass to make a 2nd level and a water side (make divider) to use with the bubbler but I was wondering if I should put salt or fresh water in the water side or if i will need to have both or is that deep of water needed? Should i just use small plastic containers for water and keep the plexi glass for more levels? the inside height is about 15in and length 36in I was thinking of keeping the dig area about 6 or 7in deep(depending on their sizes).
2)Where exactly should the heat mat be mounted on the side? in the middle? on one side? (I know it goes above the substrate or so I've read.)
3)I plan on having some roly polys but if i do a water side is there a clean up crew I could add there that would be safe?
4)If i was to make some bridges/ramps out of Popsicle sticks what would be safe to use as a glue or would twine or fishing line be okay?
5)Does the shell shop have to be in water dishes and if so which type of water salt or fresh?
6)Will dogs barking occasionally and loudness be an issue for them as far as stress? I plan on keeping them in the main living area where the pythons are but if they need quiet I can keep them in my bedroom. One of the snakes was a rescue (long story) but when we first got him he stressed out when our big dog would bark but eventually got used to it I think the vibrations got to him.
7)Is it always needed to have the back and sides of a tank insulated with the foil stuff or is that only if keeping heat in is a issue?
8 )How often is it usually needed to break down and clean if at all? What cleaning regime do ya'll use given there isn't any emergencies?
9)How long is the shelf life of organic hermit foods? can you freeze them? (like found on etsy)
10)Should I just stop where I'm at and not join the crab insanity? :P

Thanks for reading! Any and all info/advice is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the HCA!!

If you have fish experience, then you already have the knowledge for giving hermits safe water, and an understanding of aquatic sensitivities. The balls will have given needed experience for heat and humidity as they have similar requirements. Those are the hardest and most important things for new owners to get a handle on. You got this!

Moss pits work best when the crabs can climb inside and completely hide. They just adore them!

1) Using a flexible plastic might be better than plexi as UVB doesn't penetrate through plastic - that way you can cut around where the light sits. Keep in mind plexi and silicone are not a permanent pairing, the oils in the plastic break down the silicon over time leading to leaks if it is used for pools. It may last a few years but eventually it will fail and the tank will flood. Depth of substrate is crab size dependent, but these guys do grow fairly quickly and even with small crabs 6 inches may only be good for a couple of years before needing to be deepened. 40s are a great size for crabs but there is a tradeoff between substrate depth and climbing area.

2) Wherever it will best work for getting the air in the tank to 80 degrees. Usually that is smack in the middle of the back. Unless your home is super warm it usually takes a large pad that reaches from side to side. If you live in a refrigerator in winter like I do, you might need a pad that also dips below the substrate, it's okay to use that way but you have to keep up with the substrate as it dries out faster. Some temp gradient is good, but in a big tank you run the risk of one side ending up room temp which is usually too cold. With hermits the gradient can work front to back as well, rather than side to side.

3) Isopods generally do okay with various water features.

4) Aquarium silicone and superglue are safe once they no longer smell. Hot glue is safe but it almost never holds up in the heat and humidity of the tank. Fishing line and jute/hemp twine are safe.

5) Nope! You just need a basket or container to house them someplace if you want a traditional shell shop. Others put them on the substrate but they may end up buried or full of substrate. Shells placed in saltwater may get a bit more action. Expect empty shells to end up as the toilet, so make sure they are easy to get to and clean.

6) They might take a little time to adjust at first, but mine have never been really bothered by noise. I vacuum, and the cats bounce off their tank all day long without even an antenna twitch. If you are going the rescue route they may have already adjusted to home life. It's newly caught crabs that have the most trouble as they are straight from the wild and everything is new and overwhelming. Snakes are a lot more jumpy with vibrations, crabs tend to not care until they see a shadow over them.

7) Only if heat is a problem. It's a cheap way to boost temp without having to purchase another heating source. I like covering the back up my self to make it look nicer, and it has the bonus of evening the heat.

8 ) Some people never do! I end up doing a good clean and replacing substrate about once a year even though I don't ever plan on it, it just works out that way.

9) 6 months to a year depending on the ingredients and if it's been kept cool and dry. Generally proteins and anything fatty (like nuts) will go rancid first just from room temp and exposure to oxygen. Freezing is a great way to keep nutrition in the food and keep it from spoiling. Dried foods in the freezer last practically forever.

Thanks! Didn't even consider the UV not going through (mentioned that to hubs and of course he already knew), maybe making the pvc/plastic or wooden 2nd level will work better and tubs for pools. idk why i'm stuck on having a 2nd level maybe cause it looks so awesome. I do plan on upgrading after the 1st of the year to to something with a lot of height. The fish I had were freshwater so didn't need salt, sadly the entire tank got demolished in an apartment fire and I haven't had any fish since  On a happier note I do live in the south and it stays humid, mostly hot just checked the meters in the empty tank and the humidity in the house right now is 60% and my temp is 70f we are getting a small tropical storm today! haha Plan on doing some construction today on the tank so everything can dry and chemicals can dissipate. I will post pics when I'm ready for tank quality check/approval from all you pros :D I think I'm just nervous and excited at the same time!

It seems overwhelming at first, but once you're in it's GREAT! I can't wait to see how you put the tank together! Welcome to the HCA!!!

Definitely jump in! Crabs are great!

I have had Sonny and Cher for 8 years this month! I have never replaced my entire substrate, only added more when I upgraded tanks. I occasionally mix it all up by stirring from the bottom if they are both above ground.

I have three heaters on my 55 gallon, one in the middle of the back and one on each side. Temperatures in the room/ my house vary widely; this way I can have one, two, or all three plugged in as needed.

I don't use any extra lights for my crabitat - they get daylight from the window in the room.

I found this site pretty much immediately when I got my crabs, and have used information exclusively from this site. I know there are other sources out there, but I have honestly never looked at any of them because the info and people on this site has answered all my questions and given excellent advice for keeping Sonny and Cher healthy and alive all these years!

Well got my tank set up and running, here's some pics I did make the 2nd level but it's curing I will probably wait a week or so to add it in. My temp is staying at a steady 80f and humidity goes from 80% up to 85-90% after misting. I am getting a LED light and acurite today. Next thing on my agenda is shells I need all the shells! lol And will start gathering insulating supplies to have on hand for the winter. I have 2 medium sized and 2 smaller guys (PPs I think) pics of one of the bigger ones who loves to eat and is way more active than the others. The other 3 seem to love hiding in the moss pit (behind the skull hide) One of the smaller guys is in a painted shell that he chose in the store. Apparently it was donated and the guy said it was popular as someone always seems to wear it, It has a #18 on it and the one wearing it now is like a racer crab. He goes all over the tank at night lol Thanks so much for all the info This site is a God Send!!
