"Talking" to hermits

Post by PinchersAndShells » Tue Sep 13, 2016 7:15 pm

I saw that in one of the archives, that someone took a video of them wiggling their fingers like a hermit crab's antennae in front of the tank, and a crab crawled over to check it out! Well I tried it out of curiosity a few times... The first few times Dusty didn't seem to notice, but the most recent time I caught him when he was already out and about - and he actually came over to the glass! It was pretty incredible, and I'm wondering if anyone else has ever tried it or if anyone knows why they come over? Do they think it might be a crab?

Yep, tapping and wiggling always gets my guys right up to the glass! King Felix goes through a whole "tap and I'll tap back" routine, eventually stretching himself straight up along the glass to get in the last "high five" tap. Why it works, though...who knows?

I've got one that makes a beeline for my fingers and "chats" until he gets bored, but the rest still fall over themselves to run away, lol.

One time I tapped on the glass lightly and the higher pitched tapping made his antenna go higher and the lower pitched made his antenna go lower and it seemed like he was picking up the vibrations...
