My one friend had a crab that did that before. I was watching her crabs one time while she was away.

Chirping can be a sign of distress. Definitely check it out. I haven't heard mine chirp in awhile. My Es tend to chirp for no reason though.

Edit: I also wanted to mention that substrate should be a minimum of 6" or three times the height of your largest crab. whichever is deeper wins. Make sure it is mixed with dechlorinated fw or dechlorinated msw to make it sandcastle consistency. :)
