Would this be safe to use if wrapped around a tension rod? I’m planning on installing an egg crate background using Motor and Xeno’s method of keeping it up with tension rods.

I use that one it is safe but mine molded so before you put it in spray or soak it in salt water so it doesn’t do that. Hope it works out for you
