Crochet your own Hemp Net (Lots of pics)

Post by VHPlac » Wed Aug 25, 2010 12:39 pm

I use NATURAL POLISHED HEMP ($5 at Walmart at the jewelry/beads crafting section) and a size F/3.75 Crochet Hook.
I use the thinnest yarn they carry, because it is not as stiff and easy to crochet! It puffs up and gets thicker once you wet it!!! A smaller hook would make tighter/smaller stitches, but would be harder to crochet...
Image

Stitches used
CH=chain stitch
SC=single crochet
DC=double crochet
Link to crochet stitch instruction videos http://www.hassdesign.com/StitchLegend

To make a small practice piece:
1) Chain 26
2) Turn and SC in the 2nd stitch from hook (counts as 1st SC)
SC in each CH across for a total of 25 SC.
3) CH 4 and turn (counts as 1st DC and CH 2 stitch)
*DC in the 3rd SC, CH 2*
Repeat from *to* across, ending with a DC in last stitch.
4) Turn and CH 4, *DC in next DC and CH 2*.
Repeat from *to* across the row, ending with a DC in last stitch
Repeat step 4 for each row till you like the length of your net.
5) Turn CH 1 and SC in each stitch till the end. Finish off the yarn and weave in ends.

Size of the net can easily be altered to make it smaller (ladder) or larger. Just increase or decrease the beginning chain by 5 chains for ea. space.

I rinse nets under running water, wring them out and then soak in treated saltwater for 15 min. After drying I attach them with suction cups or tie them to my shower caddies :)

They look something like this

Now I know what I'm asking my mom for Christmas! I unfortunately didn't inherit the craft gene :lol:

That looks awesome. I'm sad I can't croquet. I'd pay 20 bucks for one.

Yeah, there's a thought! You could make them and sell them for a few extra bucks.

As a child I made an extremely ugly item of clothing in that same pattern :D

Hemp yarn is crazy expensive here, but I'm pretty sure burlap yarn is cheap. I shall go hunting for some

Thanks for the inspiration. It turned out really nice even though I haven't crochet since...well...grade school!
