75g rebuild: false bottom, levels, cycled pools

Post by YYWW » Wed Jan 07, 2015 11:43 pm

I have a thin, blue pvc pipe in the back left corner of the tank that has a tube running through it. That tube touches the bottom of the tank, and the other end can extemd as far as the ground outside the tank.
Honestly i'm not sure what to do with all that, but i'm prepared to bring a bucket and rewire the air pump to create a siphon when the time comes!

ETA: If you're smart, and not like me, you could rum an actual siphon im that pipe instead of just a tube. Then all you'd need to do for a flood is get a bucket and turn it on!

Love it! What is the white hose thing going into the pools?

Eta: nevermind. Tapatalk just didn't load comments. Bridges. Cool!

Looks amazing so far! I do have one question. The pools, are those filters on top and bubbles? Just curious on the type of filter (I plan on doing 2.5G pools) and if there's any worry of the crabs hurting themselves on them?

I use Aqueon Quietflow filters, and also bubblers. There's basically 0 risk of crabs hurting themselves because they are too big to fit into the intake, and the filter is crammed with a filter pad so they don't enter the motor area. Crabs also have plenty opportunity to NOT endanger themselves. They can get in and out and move around easily.

Nice! I'll have to keep them in mind while I'm building :D If you don't mind, around how much did they cost? I don't imagine they make one specifically for 2.5G tanks though, right?

They don't, and tiny filters are not too helpful with cycling anyway, so go straught for a 5gal or 10gal rated filter. I ordered my filters for under $10 each from Amazon: Aqueon 06080 QuietFlow 10 Power Filter, 100GPH https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SP65N8/re ... ivb1ZEC1V8
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SP65N8/re ... ivb1ZEC1V8 and i guess they work well for both water types. They are very VERY quiet and i replaced the filter media with these sponge pad things, but i like wode's foam blocks. Too late for me now, my SW is already cycled. Also i have a bunch of the pad left over.
These filters actually have an extended intake stick. It reachs down from the filter and sucks up the water that is closer ti the bottom of the tank. This stick propped the filter up and stopped it from hanging properly, so i simply removed it. I plan on shortening and returning it some time. In the mean time the bubblers do a pretty good job of tossing up and circulating the pools for filtration.

Hope you don't mind another question  The sponge pads and foam blocks, are these aquarium specific?
