Sizing and Sexing the Hermits

Post by PinchersAndShells » Fri Nov 04, 2016 10:53 am

Since I have a terrible memory I decided to post all the things pertaining to my process of sizing the crabs here.
Before people comment on me handling the crabs, I never do it unless I'm trying to do something like this, or if I'm changing the water dishes, leave to get water to fill an empty bowl, and come back to a hermit sitting in it staring at me.
I sized Edd today, he turns out to be a medium! (Bad quality, he started to run as soon as he came out of the shell.)
Image
I also took a picture of his BP, he's the only one who's ever pinched me, he's done it twice.

I don't think you have to worry about anyone judging you here! That looks like a big pincher! One of my larges got me when I upgraded my tank. I never handle mine. I wasn't really paying attention, just picked up the shell, went to move it, and bam, it came out and nailed me! I couldn't put it down fast enough I guess! Gave me a blood blister! Yowsers! Mad respect for those pinchers!

how bad does it hurt to get pinched? I only ever hold mine when doing something major to the tank, when I first bring them home and if I have to break up a fight which has not happened since I got the upgrade and Gary moved out. They are so small, the claws, I can't imagine they would hurt at all

It hurt me. Of course mine got me right in the center of my hand. It felt kinda like a shot from the doctor.

I don't know how to describe it as the first one was the only one that actually hurt which was a year ago, the second was on the loose skin on my knuckles, so I didn't realize he was pinching until he let go.

The sizing chart is here, however I had to save it to be able to share it, so do not give me the credit for making it. :)

Thank you so much!!! Now I'm excited to put it to use. Not sure I'm ready to sex them though. I think they are still pretty scared of me.

So would this guy be a small or a medium?

Medium, you based it off of where his legs are in the bullseyes. :)

I have yet to size ours yet but would be fun to see exactly where they are since we first got them:)

Agreed, I've had my three biggest for over a year and never sized them so there's no telling how much they've grown, but my newest and smallest is likely to grow more, so I'm going to try to get him before he buries again.
