Hermit Crab Hijinx

Post by CrabbyLover77 » Mon Sep 23, 2019 12:57 am

Some videos of Beau and Kaulder in their crabitat. Image Sorry they're not the best quality. It was dark, and this security cam isn't the best in the dark.

Love those! For that exact reason of knocking shells off the second level, I stopped doing the 2nd level shell shop. I also had visions of mid shell change, falling off the ledge. Lol

Thanks! Image
I think you're right, I might move those shells down. I only have a 20 gal long and a lot of shells, so I was trying not to clutter up their walking space. The best part is, those shells at the top are too small for Beau, but I guess he wanted to be nosey and check them out anyway lol. Image

To keep loose shells from cluttering up the walking space, and keep them off the substrate (and thus cleaner), I usually put them in some kind of basket or shower caddy, hung up somewhere, with a way to climb up to it. A big enough basket with steep enough sides keeps them from bunging them down; they just get whatever one they want to change into and leave their old one in the basket, nice and tidy!

That is definitely a good idea, but I don't have enough room for a caddy. But I do have a homemade second level with a few shells and coconut hut on top. I used cholla wood as railings. I took the coconut hut off which made room for more shells. I also got a 5"x3" suction cup soap dish with sides, and filled that with some shells. It's definitely helped with the clutter on the sand. Why not just put another railing across the front? That way, they can climb up and into it, but it would be much more difficult for them to knock the shells off onto the lower level (they would have to lift them up over the railing first, which would be unlikely).

That's a good idea. I was thinking I didn't want to block their way up, forgetting that they can climb over the wood lol. I'll have to order a couple more pieces of cholla wood off Amazon (the seller I ordered the other pieces from sells them in a set of 2). Thanks! Image

Right! More climbing is actually better for them! Just like us, they need to move. :)

That's why I love this site. Everyone has thoughts and ideas I would probably not come up with myself. Thanks again.
