How do I know if its dead?

Yesterday morning I found one of my crabs out of its shell. I cut a 2 liter bottle and put it around the crab, but I am not sure if its dead or surface molting. Can anybody help me?

Dead crabs give off a bad rotten fishy smell. Have you tried to touch it at all? If so did it move at all? Don't handle just barely nudge it to see if you get a response.

I nudged it,and it didn't move. It's also giving off a stinky fishy smell. I think it's time I get it out and hold a funeral.
