Fist size PP's

What shell size is considered fist size? A 1 1/8" opening?

The opening size can sometimes be completely unrelated to the actual shell size. I get my shells from naplesseashellcompany.com and I have found absolutely tiny and very large shells that have the same size opening.

Because of this, I usually buy multiple shells and return the ones that are either too small or two large.

Also - fist-sizes hermit crabs? Wow! That’s pretty big! Mine are medium sized, but not that big. I can’t think of anything to compare them to.

My crabs are not ready for an upgrade, they’re still medium sized, but my mom told me she would not buy them a bigger tank unless they’re the size of my fist. I found that is actually a shell with a 1 3/4” opening.

My largest crabs are wearing 1 1/4 inch opening turbos, and they completely fill up the shell, which means their larger pincher is sticking out when fully retracted.

Remember, your crabs aren’t the size of your fist depicting on the shell they wear, their body has to appropriately fit inside the shell.

I agree that my crabs are still medium size and this means Buckbeak is wearing a shell that’s too big. Buckbeak was looking at shells last night. He contemplated changing into a banded Mexican turbo that also had a 1 1/4” opening but changed his mind. I’m hoping he’ll change into a shell that is more of an appropriate size for him.
