Honey

Post by crabby33 » Sat Feb 02, 2019 12:22 pm

Is honey a healing food or a treat only? There are a couple of groups that say honey as a healing food is a myth and recommended as a treat only and believe it is like giving crabs solid sugar.

I didn’t want to buy it as a healing food and then someone in one of the Facebook talk pages would tell me to only offer it as a treat and not for healing.

It is a healing food, honey had natural antibiotic properties and packs a huge kick of minerals, vitamins, sugar and calories. It can give a good jump start to an ailing crab.

It can also be fed regularly as a treat, but I agree that every day would likely be too often. Bee pollen has a lot more minerals and a lot less sugar and can be part of a staple diet instead.

The thing is, animals need sugars within their diets. Without, they dont tend to do well and have to rely on other sources for energy. (Yes, fat is commonly used for energy, but sugars tend to be rather useful for some applications, such as intensive workout which takes too long to break down fats...)

Processed sugars are damaging on an organism, but processed sugars - coming from fruits, honey and the like - are relatively healthy.

It's like saying feeding the crabs fruit is a big no no, since it contains sugar?

The thing is, one of the other groups I’m in, the Land Hermit Crab Owner’s Society, says it’s recommended as a treat only and that it’s not a healing food. I’ve wanted to buy some from GotButterflies to have on hand just in case one of my guys needs a quick boost.

I wonder if the person who says it isn't a healing food for crabs, would say the same for people? Honey has been used for it's healing properties for thousands of years. It's used both externally for healing wounds (both in human and veterinary medicine), as well as internally for things like sore throats, colds, flus, coughs, etc.

Hey I know GB sells it but since you are in DFW, you can get local raw honey at Walmart in the peanut butter aisle for a few dollars and it will last a while.

Yeah, there is a Walmart close to where I live. Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll just pick up some honey locally.
