They carry water in their shells and eco earth or leaf litter can stain that with tannins, also they secrete corrosive fluids to change the shape of the inside of their shells.
It could be a combination of old food, shell water, or bodily waste.

Wait, what? Does the urinary tract run through their face?

Yep, that’s right, and they are capable of flicking waste out of their shells with the extra legs concealed within the shell.

LOL, I like how the person posting the reply had to have a -sigh- at the beginning before explaining it!

This is a mild response compared to some of the past HCA discussions.
Some of the old threads are a trip to read; people could get downright vicious towards each other.

I had no idea that they pee under their eyes- I think that's a bit weird. And the fact that they use their legs to poop is actually pretty interesting. I've always wondered how they managed that!

I have 4 purple pinchers. Crush, Bubbles, Sheldon, Sandy, and little Angelo. And I love Jesus! He is the way, the truth and the life, and he knew what he was doing when he made hermit crabs!☺

They use their little legs to move the poop from the back where their anus is, out of the shell.
